Description

L. E. YOUNG.
, ARTICLE OF CUTLERY.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. I3. 1915.

Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
UNTE @Ad AN LOUIS E. YOUNG, OF WELLINGTON, COLORADO.
ARTICLE OF CUTLERY.
Application filed November 13, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs E. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vellington, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Articles of Cutlery, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to articles of cutlery and more particularly to knives or to knife backs.
Th principal object of the invention is to construct the knife back or handle in such manner that a whet stone may be conveniently held thereon and removed for sharpening the blade of the knife.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken therethrough. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein, I have shown an ordinary penknife frame 1 having the end piece secured thereto as is usual by the blade pivoting levers 4: and 5. The end piece has its inner edge provided with an under cut shoulder 6 which is defined upon the sides of the end piece by the lips or flanges 7 The end piece 3 is provided with a square inner edge and a transverse channel 8 formed upon its under side adjacent Specification of Letters Patent.

the inner edge and adapted to receive the inturned fingers 9 of the retaining plate 10.
This retaining plate is turned down upon its side edges to form holding flanges 11. The whet stone or other similar sharpening element is indicated at 12 and is constructed so as to resemble on its outer surface the ordinary knife back while its inner surface is flat. One end of the stone is tapered to fit the under cut shoulder 6 and the opposite end is squared to abut against the squared inner edge of the end piece 3 and is of a thickness as will permit the retaining plate 10 extending over the same. When the plate 10 is in operative position the stone will be held against displacement, the lips or flanges 7 and 11 holding the stone against any lateral displacement.
What is claimed is In combination, a knife handle having an end piece secured thereto provided with an under-cut shoulder, a second end piece secured to the handle having a transverse channel, a stone arranged between said end pieces and having one of its ends engaging with the under-cut shoulder, a retaining plate formed with inturned fingers and a holding flange, the fingers of the retaining plate engaging in the channel of the second end piece and positioning the holding flange thereof over the opposite end of the stone.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS E. YOUNG.
