PATENT OFFICE.
ERASER-' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 793,520, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed February 23, 1905. Serial No. 246,893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY H. HALL, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Treichlers, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices of this character having a rubber eraser and an attached blade.
The object had in view is to combine in one device a sharpened blade and an erasive block of rubber, with the combination device affording advantages both novel and useful over all similar erasers known to me.
The invention consists of the special construction, arrangement, and combination of parts shown by the accompanying drawings and which will hereinafter be fully described, the features of novelty being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved combination-eraser with the blade shown adjusted readyfor use. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the blade shown adjusted to folded position. Fig. 3 is an edge view with the blade folded; and Fig. 4 is a sectional View, the same being taken on line 4 L of Fig. 2, but with the ends of the eraser shown reversed.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I employ a suitable block of rubber A and secure a plate B to one side thereof and a similar plate B to its opposite side by means of tubular or other form of rivets C O. The rivet C is suitably lengthened, adapted for forming the pivot of a plate D, and upon which rivet the plate is turned to folded or unfolded adjustment, as will be understood.
It will be noticed that the rivet attachment of the plate D is located near one end thereof and the plate suitably lengthened, adapting its free end to project beyond that end of the rubber block when the plate is adjusted to unfolded adjustment. The forward or free end of the plate D is sharpened substantially as indicated at E, and the upper surface of the pivoted plate may be roughened by scoring or otherwise, as indicated at F thereon.
At one side edge of the plate B, I provide a suitable lug G, which may consist of an integral upturned portion thereof or be otherwise formed. At the opposite end of the plate B from the end thereof to which the plate or blade D is secured I provide a pocket for the sharpened edge of the blade, consisting of a flange H, having an inwardly-projecting edge H, with the latter adapted to overlie the position of the sharpened end or edge E on the plate D when the latter is adjusted to folded position. Myinvention is further characterized by provision of a shoulder I at one edge of the pivoted end of the plate or blade D and with the same located for engagement with the lug G on the plate B when the latter is unfolded to position adapted for use of its sharpened edge E.
The construction of my improved eraser will be understood from the above description' upon reference to the several figures of the drawings.
As points of novelty residing in my invention, in addition to its cheapness to manufacture and ready use of either the blade or rubber erasive features, I would call attention to the shoulder and lug devices holding the blade at proper unfolded adjustment for effective use of its sharpened edge and to the flange H, with its inturned edge H, forming a guard for the sharpened edge E of the blade D when the latter is adjusted to folded position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. The combination with an erasive block, of a blade pivoted thereto, having an erasive edge, a fixedly-located lug attached to said block and a shoulder on the blade whereby to arrest pivotal adjustment of the latter, and a guard attached to said block for protection of the blades erasive edge, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an erasive block, of a plate secured thereto, a blade pivoted to the plate, a lug on the plate and a shoulder on the blade with the same adapted forarresting pivotal action of the blade, and a guard on the plate adapted for receiving the free end of the blade, when the latter is turned to folded position, substantially as described.
3. The combination of an erasive block, a plate secured thereto, a blade pivoted to the plate, having an erasive edge and an arresting-shoulder, a lug on the plate With which the shoulder on the blade is adapted to engage,
and a flange on the plate forming a guard for the erasive edge of the blade, when the latter is adjusted to folded position, substantially as described.
I 4:. The combination of an erasive block, a plate secured thereto, a blade pivoted to the plate, having an erasive edge and an arrestingshoulder, a lug on the plate With which the shoulder on the blade is adapted to engage, and a guard on the plate consisting of a flange, having an inturned edge and With the latter adapted to overlie the blades erasive edge, when it is adjusted to folded position, substantially as described.
HENRY H. HALL.
