BACK-BAND AND TRACE HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PERRY G. Gmnnns, citizen of the United States, residing at Hartsfield, in the county of Colquitt and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band and Trace Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the backhand and trace holder portions of a harness, and has for one of its objects to simplify the construction, increase the durability and efficiency without decreasing the strength, and likewise to decrease the cost of manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a simply constructed device which will hold the trace from sagging or catching upon other portions of the harness.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character wherein provision is made for protecting the material of the backhand from abrasion.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a body portion represented as a whole at 10 and preferably constructed of a single plate of metal struck out by a suitable die and by one operation. The body 10 is formed with an upwardly directed reduced portion 11 having a stud 12 projecting therefrom substantially at the juncture of the reduced projection 11 and the body 10, the stud being extended at its outer end 13 and directed upwardly and inwardly and connected at its upper end at 14: to the upper end of the projection 11. Mounted for rotation upon the stud 12 is a rein or plowline supporting roller 15. The portion 13 of the stud thus serves as a guard over the roller 15 and to prevent the rein or plowline from being displaced therefrom.

ber of relatively long openings 161718 to receive the backstrap, indicated at 19, which is Woven through the openings as shown. The openings l61718 produce relatively narrow webs or sections of the material 2021. Embracing the material of the body 10 above the opening 16 is a guard or sheathing 22 formed of sheet metal, while a similar guard or sheathing 23 is arranged to embrace the web 21. The guards 2223 are each bent into U-shape and with their outer corners rounded so that they present a rounded surface to the material of the backstrap l9, and thus prevent abrasion of the latter against the sharp edges of the material of the body 10 and the web 21. The body 10 together with 1ts extension 11 being constructed from a plate of sheet metal, the edges of the apertures 16-1718 are relatively sharp, but by employing the guards 2223 the material of the member 19 is protected from contact with these sharp edges and caused to engage only with the rounded edges of the guards. By this means the body may be constructed of relatively cheap thin material, while at the same time prevented from abrading the relatively soft material of the backstrap. This is an important feature of applicants device and materially decreases the cost of manufacturing without decreasing the efficiency or strength.
Formed through the body 10adjacentto the upper edges of the guard 22 are apertures 24;, the lower sides of the apertures extending below the upper line of the mem ber 22, and as the member 22 is disposed in position upon the body 10, the portions thereof which project over the openings 2 1 are depressed into the opening by a suitable implement, and thus lock the member 22 from displacement, as represented in Fig. 2. This constitutes a very simple, effectual and inexpensive lock bet-ween the members 10 and 22.
At its lower end the body 10 is reduced transversely and formed into an open loop 25 with a tongue 26 projecting into the interior of the loop, the tongue being adapted to be bent into an upwardly directed hook, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive a snap device 27, preferably provided with a spring tongue 28. The snap is designed to receive and support the draft trace, which is usually constructed of a section of a chain as indicated at 29. The snap 27 is extended downwardly at its lower end in the form of a bearing portion 20 to bear against the lower web of the loop 25 and thus support the snap and prevent its inward movement when downward strain is applied by the draft device 29. r
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufao tured, the body being produced from a plate of metal by the single operation of a die, while the guard members 2223 may likewise be produced by a single die and bent into the required shape.
I claim A frame having an elongated opening adapted to receive a band and a plurality of apertures adjacent to the opening, and a metal guard U-shaped transversely and arranged to engage around one edge of the opening to protect the band and to extend over a portion of each of the apertures, the metal of the guard which projects over the apertures being compressed into the same to lock the guard to the frame.
