EMELXN E A LEXHNDER EMELYNE ALEXANDER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HAIR STRAIGHTENING AND SINGEING- COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 19.1.4.
Application filed August 27, 1913. Serial No. 786,975.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMELYNE Annxannnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Straightening and Singeing Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to combs, and it more particularly relates to an improved form of hair-straightening and singeing comb.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a comb of this character by means of which kinky hair may be easily, cll'cctually straightened, without detriment thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a comb of this character which may be subjected to a moderate degree of heat without detrimentally atlecting the hair, and to provide a suitable handle of material which will protect the hands of the user from the heat.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a comb of this character with which the hair is simultaneously combed and ironed; and to provide a comb of this character of simple construction, comparatively inexpensive and thoroughly practical and etlcctive.
In the accompanying drawings which supplement; this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation view of the, comb which consti tutes my invention. Fig. 2 is a view oi. the comb at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional. view on the line E3-3, Fig. t; and Fig. 4 is a view of the comb from the opposite side of the Fig. 1.
In these drawings in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the comb consists of the comb head 10, the handle bar 11, the handle 12, and the teeth 13. The comb head is preferably cylindrical, and the teeth 13 extend. substantially tangential from the head, said teeth being slightly curved and being tapered -from their respective bases to their ends. The spaces between the teeth are outwardly divergent, so that the hair may easily pass between the teeth and may be accumulated into groups which are compressed between the teeth at their bases. The handle bar 11 constitutes an exl tension of the head 10, and has its outer end formed into a loop 14. This loop is tilled with asbestos, felt, or other suitable packing 15, and around this packing is secured a cover, which may be of cloth, leather, cloth and leather, or other fibrous and heat-resisting material. The elements 10, ll, 13 and 14L are preferably formed integrally from castiron, steel or other suitable metal; and the member which con'ipriscs these elements is yu'c'lorably nickel-plated, so as to prevent rust or corrosion, when the comb is unused for a while, and also to prevent the heat from radiating too rapidly from said body, so that it retains sullicicnt heat for pressing the hair. With a comb of this character, hair which is extremely curly or kinky, may be perfectly straightened by passing the teeth of the comb through the hair while holding the hair in such position that the cylindrical surface of the head presses against the hair and transmits heat thereto, while smoothing the hair with its smooth and evenly curved surface.
It is obvious that with a device such as described, I may easily attain the foregoing objects in a thoroughly practical and satisfactory manner.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the proportions and arrangcmcnts ol the parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is:
A comb of the character described comprising a head provided with teeth and a handle member said teeth and handle member being integrally produced with the head, the tree extremity of such handle member being formed to ali'ord a loop, a filling 0i? compressible material within the loop, and a flexible cover incasing such loop and main taining the filling against displacement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMELYNE ALEXANDER.
Witnesses WM. HENRY Donns, JEANETTE CRAIG.
