GEORGE L. SCHEEL, OFCHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAIR-DRYING DEVICE.
Application led November 3, 1915.
To ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. SCHEEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Drying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hair drying devices, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction, one which may be readily and easily operated, and one which Y will be highly efcient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations andarrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a hair drying device embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line -m of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a comb consisting of a back 1 from one side of which project spaced teeth 2. Formed in the back 1 is a longitudinally extending cylindrical chamber 3 and a longitudinally extending air passage 4 from which lead branch passages 5 opening in the direction of the teeth 2, as shown.
The chamber 3 opens in the outer end of the comb and removably arranged therein is a heating element 6 in the form of a cylindrical metallic bar having a non-heat conducting handle or knob 7 at one end adapted, when said heating element is positioned in said chamber, to project from the comb so as to be readily engageable by the fingers. The handle 7 is formed with a reduced shoulder 8 adapted to frictionally engage with the outer end portion of charnber 3 in order to yieldingly hold the heating element in position therein. Said charnber is lined with a lining 9 of non-heat conducting material or semi-non-heat conducting material so as to prevent overheating of the back 1 in the use of the device, it being clear that were the back 1 permitted v to become very hot, there would be a possibility of scorching or burning the scalp or Specification of Letters Patent.

any other part of-the body against whic the same might be placed.
-At the opposite end of the comb is provided a depressible rubber bulb 10 through the medium of which air may be forced through the passages 4 and 5. yThe bulb 10 is mounted at the under side of a handle 11 of non-heat conducting material which is securely fastened in the adjacent endV of back l. Said handle 11 is formed with a passage 12 in which-is arranged a tube 13 adapted to enter one end of bulb 10, the opposite end of said bulb being mounted in a cap 14 which is secured to the corresponding end of said handle 11. The bulb 10 is thus removably held in position by engagement of the opposite ends thereof with tube 13 and cap 14, permitting of ready removal of the same in case the same becomes worn or disabled so as to allow for ready renewal of the same. Flap valves 15 and 16 coperate with the bulb 10 so that upon successive depression of the same air will be pumped thereby through the passages 4 and 5, as will be readily understood.
In use, the heating element 6 is heated over a gas jet or the like and when sufciently heated is inserted into the chamber 3. The heat of said element is conducted through the walls of the comb back and also `through the open rearward end of said chamber which communicates with the corresponding end of passage 4 so that in the passage of air from the bulb 10 through passages 4 and 5, the same will become heated as is of course desirable in connection with the function of the device, which is that of drying hair. The passage 4 tapers toward its outer endl ,in order to effect the uniform distribution of the air to the branch passages 5, and the latter are tapered toward their outer ends in order to concentrate the air immediately before discharged, and thus increase the pressure of the stream of air discharged.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a comb comprising a back; teeth projecting from said back, there being a longitudinally extending air passage formed in said back having branch passages opening in the direction of said teeth; ay heating element removably mounted in said back; and means for forcing air through said passages, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a comb comprising a back; teeth projecting from said back, there being a longitudinally extending air passage formed in said back having branch passages opening in the direction of said teeth; a longitudinally extending chamber also formed in said back opening in the outer end of the comb; a heating element removably mounted in said chamber; a nonheat conducting lining for said chamber;
Copie: of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the and means for forcing air through said passa ges, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a comb comprising a back; teeth projecting from said back, there being a longitudinally extending air passage formed in said back having branch passages opening in the direction of. said teeth; a longitudinally extending chamber also formed in said back opening in the outer end of the comb; a heating eiement removably mounted in said chamber; and means for forcing air through said passage or through said chamber when said heating element is removed, substantially as lescribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE Ii. SCHEEL.
