OARL E. MILLER, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF TO ROBERT S. BROWN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
CONIB.
SPECIFICATION formingpart' of Letters Patent No. 763,012, dated June 21, 1904.
Application flied August Z5, 1903. Serial No. 170,691. (No model.)
l zen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and 'State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Straighteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient device for straightening the hair of persons of the black or negro race or of other persons having intensely curly or crisped hair; and to such ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.-
It is a well-known fact that persons ofthe black or negro race generally and quite a large number of persons outside of this race, some even of the white race, have hair which curls so tightly or closely'that it cannot be combed into the desired form or parted by any ordinary means or treatment.
By my invention I provide a simple device by the use of which this intensely curly hair may be quickly and easily straightened more or less, and thereby put into condition so that it may be combed and parted. lBy the use of th'e said device th hair will not usually be entirely straightened, nor is such a result desired, it being preferred rather simply to remove the intense curl from the hair, so that it may be easily controlled, but leaving the same with a wavy appearance.
The device is illustrated in the accompany- 'ing drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, with some parts broken away, showing my improved device, which device involves a metallic comb, a metallic straightening-bar, and a handle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the said device. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on theline 0031133 of Fig. 1.
Thel numeral 1 indicates a metallicpcomb, which is preferably constructed of aluminium and is provided with a thin and lat back or bar portion.
The numeral 2 indicates the so called straightening-bar, which is preferably constructed of steel or viron Vand made rectangular in cross-section. At one end-the bar 2 is provided with'a double-ended retaining-clip 3, shown as secured thereto by a set-screw 4. At its other end the bar 2 is provided with a projecting screw-threaded stem 5, which immediately adjacent to the adjoining end of said bar 2 is squared at 6. Another doubleended clip 7, which corresponds in form to the clip 3, is provided with a squared central perforation which fits the squared portion 6 of the stem 5, and thus holds the clip from turning.
The numeral 8 indicates a handpiece of wood, vulcanized rubber, or other material which is a non-conductor of heat. This handpiece 8 is screw-threaded at one end to fit the threaded stem 5, but is counterbored so as to clear the squared portion 6 of said stem and permit said handle to be freely turned and screwed against the movable clip 7.
The metallic comb 1 is adapted 'to be placed on either sideA of the bar 2 and in either position to be clamped and held by the inturned ends of the clips 3 and 7. As is evident, when the clip 7 is, by turning the handpiece 8, pressed against the adjacent end of the comb l the said comb will be firmly held between fthe two clips and with one face closely pressed Vagainst the adjacent side of the bar 2. It is also evident that the comb may be adjusted so that`its teeth project any desired distance below the bar 2. v
In the use of the device above described the bar 2 should be heated by placing the same in a gas-flame, on hot coals, or any other suitable place while the comb is removed therefrom, and the comb should be thereafter applied in working position. The comb will of course be quickly heated by radiation.
In the use of the device the comb is run through the hair in advance ofthe bar 1, and the hair is drawn against the lower corner of the said bar and caused to abruptly turn over the same, which has the effect of straightening the hair. With the comb applied as shown in Fig. 3 the hair will be turned over the corner of the bar 2, which in said view is marked 22 To comb one side of the hair in the above manner-to wit, the left-hand side-the handle of the device being projected forward, the comb should be placed as shown in Figs. 1 and 3; but to comb the right-hand side of the hair in the same manner the comb should be shifted tothe opposite side of the bar 2, and in this latter case the hair would be drawn or bent over that edge of the straightening-bar 2 which in F ig. 3 is marked 2b.
- The device described is capable of considerable modification within the scope of my invention as herein set forth and claimed, and provision may be made whereby the so-called "straightening-bar may be kept constantly heated either by the application thereto of a gas-burner or an electric heating-coil.
The device described while primarily intended for use in straightening hair will also be found very serviceable as a means for rapidly drying hair, and especially for use by women for drying the hair 'after the same has been shampooed.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
l. The combination with a metallic comb,
of a metallic heating-bar, which bar is rectangular in cross-section, and is provided with a handle that is a non-conductor of heat, and means whereby the said comb may, at will, be firmly attached to one side of said heatingbar, and may, at will, be removed therefrom and firmly attached to the opposite side of the said bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with a metallic comb 1, of the metallic heating-bar 2, formed rectangular in cross-section, and having the clamp Sat one end and the threaded stem 5 at its other end, the double-ended movable clip 7 working on said stem 5 and coperating with said clip 3 to hold the comb, at different times, on the opposite sides of said heatingbar, and a handle 8 Working with screwthreaded engagement on said stem 3 and adapted to press said clip 7 against the adjacent end of said comb l, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof 1 afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
