UNITED sTArns PATENT OFFICE.
MABEL HARRINGTON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BRASSIERE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MABEL HARRINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brassieres, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brassieres, and proposes a construction which is especially adapted as a bust form and is essentially useful for rectifying defects in the human figure and for producing natural bust outlines.
For this purpose the brassiere is provided with individually adjustable breast pads made up of circular shirr ruffles and so combined with the garment proper that they form natural and rounded bust outlines, yet are essentially inconspicuous and incapable of detection. Such a brassiere may be used with especial advantage by persons whose flatness of bust may amount to a substantial deformity, or whose bust may be irregularly developed, 2'. 6. larger on one side than the other.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere in which the features of the invention are incorporated; Fig. 2 is a view looking toward the inner face of the front of the improved brassiere; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the breast pads on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The brassiere consists of a form fitting upper garment l of any suitable construction and provided with breast pads designated generally by the numeral 2. The breast pads 2 are arranged adjacent the inner face of the garment and are permanently associated therewith. The section or sections of material forming the front of the garment have their external surface perfectly plain and smooth, and are so shaped as to provide some fullness at each side of the garment, which fullness is taken up by the breast pads 2 which intervene between the garment proper and the wearers body.

in each instance comprise a circular retaining strip 3, permanently secured along a circular line to the garment l and having at its free edge a draw string 4:, and a plurality of overlapping or concentric circular ruflied padding strips 5 arranged within the strips 3 and having their ruffles in nested re lation. The strips 5, as shown and preferred, are made of an integral section of material. and are provided by folding said material along circular lines. The strips 5 are permanently secured to the garmentalong a circular line concentric and closely adjacent the line of attachment of the strip 3.
The pads 2 may be adjusted to have any suitable or desired thickness. As the draw string 4 is tightened, the thickness of the pad provided by the strips 5 is diminished. On the otherhand, if the draw string 4 be let out, the strips 3 and 5 can assume a greater angle relatively to the garment and the strips 5 will also have a measure of expansion, so that the thickness of the pad is correspondingly increased. It will be observed that in any event the pad as a whole has a meniscus cross section, being of least thickness adjacent the edges of the strips 4: and 5 and that, Whatever its adjustment, the external surface of the garment is perfectly smooth and regular, yet presents a clearly defined outline similar to that of any form fitting upper garment when worn on a normal figure.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A brassiere comprising a form fitting upper garment having breast pads at each side of the front thereof, each breast pad comprising a circular retaining strip secured by stitching along a circular line to the inner face of the garment, and having a draw string along its inner free edge, and a plurality of ruffled circular padding strips arranged concentrically within the retaining strip and also secured by stitching along a circular line to the inner face of the garment, the line of attachment of the padding strips closely adjoining the line of attachment of the retaining strip.
2. A brassiere comprising a form fitting upper garment having breast pads at each The breast pads are of circular form and 1 side of the front thereof, each breast pad comprising a circular retaining strip se- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set cured by stltching along a circular line to my hand in presence of two subscribing the inner face of the garment, and having witnesses.
