BUST REDUCER BRAs'slRE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 24| 1913.
En sTATEs PATENT orme.
MARIE PERILLAT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO YE LADYS UTFITTERIE, A COPARTNERSHIP COMPOSED 0F SIDNEY II.BURNS AND CHARLES D. PERILLAT,
BOTH 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUST-REDUCER 'BRAssIRE Specification of Letters Patent,
Application led May 24, 1913. Serial No. 769,583.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE PERILLAT, av
citizen of France, and a resident of the city of, New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and ImprovedfBust-Reducer Brassire, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y
Tfhisy invention relates to ladies apparel, and has particular reference to means for adding to the comfort and appearance with respect especially to bust forms.
Among the special objects of this invention is to provide a device having'a neat appearance which serves to reduce. oresupport a womans bust in accordance withl the demands of the present modes of dress.
More specifically stated, one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device for use by largewomen which will serve to add to the graceful appearance of their busts as well as adding to their comfort.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brassire including a pair of side backV pieces made of rigid material to prevent flesh bulging and corset lines, thus provid-v ing a smooth back foundation for gowns.
A further object of the invention is to form in a device of the character indicated a center back piece made of elastic webbing to provide elasticity, thus preventing Wrinkling andv displacement of said side back pieces.
A still further object of the invention is to introduce a pair of elastic breast pieces to prevent relaxation, bulging and corset lines and, on the whole, providing a comfortable -and hygienic support and a smooth and shapely gown foundation that is self adjustable.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter 'be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in' thel drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of 'a preferred embodiment of this brassire shown in position at the top of a low-bust corset; Fig. 2 is a back view of the same; Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the inner surface of the device extended; and Fig., 4 is a verticaltransverse section on the line 4-74 of Fig. 3. i
The device may be made 'of any suitable materials and the relative sizes and proportions of the parts, as well as the general design or ornamentation thereof, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention hereinafter more fully set forth andspeciflcally claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, this brassire includes a pair of side backs 10 lconnected at their opposing edges 11 by an elastic transversely. extending back strap 12. -The width of the back strap coincides substantially with the vertical width `of the side backsv10, andsaid elastic strap is permanently connected to said side backs. Each of the side backs is provided witha shoulder lstrap 13 which extends upwardly and forwardlyvover the shoulder and provided With a plurality of eyelets 14l at its free end.
At thefront of the device I vprovide a pair of breast pieces 15 of peculiar construction, each of which is madevof peculiarly knitted fabric and provided with elastics 15 for extension in one direction only. namely, circumferentially of the wearer. These pieces are knitted orl'woven over a convex die, thus putting the convexity into -the fabric oircumferentially instead of vertically or transversely, whereby they are given a convex form and are prevented from stretching in a vertical direction; that is to say, they-are so formed as i to be much wider vertically at their centers than they ,are at their ends. v The pieces 15 are secured. permanently'at their outer ends at 16 to the ends of the side backs remote from the back, and at their front or adjacent ends they are provided with means of any suitable nature for' securing them together at thefront of the per'- son, as shown in Fig. 1. The securing means illustrated comprises a set of hooks 17 carried by one member and eyes 18 carried by the other member.
As shown in Figs. 3 and. .4 each of the piecesl is provided with a verticallyarranged rib 19 stitched at its ends preferably upon the inner surface of said piece-substantially midway betweenv its ends. This rib serves to maintain the piece distended vertically which adds to the convenience as well as the appearance of the device when in use. At the upper edge and preferably adjacent the upper end of each of the ribs 19 I provide a tab 20 having a hook 21 for cooperation with the eyelets 14 of the shoulder straps. At 22 I show one or more casings extending downwardly and diagonally along the side backs .1 0 substantiallyl from one end to the other, and in each of said casings I provide a stiffener 23 which `may occupy any desired portion of the length of its casing,
preferably, however, extending only partially from one end to the other, as shown in Fig. 3. The purpose of these stilfeners is to assist in preserving the most desirable form of a fleshy person, but it is to be noted 1n this connection that by providing for the adjustment of such stiffness along the casings, they may be' placed Wherever found most desirable for their purpose according to the individual. I also prefer to employ a downwardly extending tab 24 secured at one end at 25 to the front end of one of the breast piec'e fasteners, said'tab being provided with an eyelet 26 whereby the same may be secured in place. by attachment to a corset stay or may be secured in any other suitable way.
These devices are made in sizes. A woman having a forty inch bust, for instance, by the use of'a number 38 brassire made in accordance with this invention, may apply and wear the same with absolute comfort with a much neater appearance than would be possible without the same. The elasticity of the back strap 12 and the breast pieces, together with the adjustment provided along the eyelets 14, will insure absolute comfort in connection with the added appearance to the figure due to the application of the device asl above set forth. It is to be noted, furthermore, that lthis device is adapted especially for use in connection with the lowbust corsets now commonly worn, and hence I provide means to meet the demands of the smartest appearing women with respect to the neat appearance which depends so largely upon the proper corset and brassiere.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent: v f In a brassire of the character set forth, the combination of a pair of side backs, an elastic strap connecting the same together at the back, each of the side backs being provided with one or more diagonally extend ing casings' extending from one end to the other, a stifener in each of said casings, a breast piece secured at one end to the outer end of each of the side backs, said piece being formed convex and wider at the middle than at its ends and provided with elastics.y
extending from one end to the other, means connected to each of the breast pieces maintaining it substantially in definite form vertically, means to secure the free ends of the breast pieces together in the front, and straps and tabs serving to maintain the brassire in definite position vertically.
In testimony. whereof I have signed my.
name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. MARIE PERILLAT.
