a citizen of the United States, residing'at.

Union Level, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Curtain and Pole Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to curtain poles and curtain hangers, and has for an object to provide an improved construction of hanging devices which may be conveniently attached to or removed from the curtain, and connected with the pole for free sliding movements thereon, whereby the curtain can be adjusted conveniently to any desired position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of pole which will include means for holding the end hangers against sliding movement, so as to prevent the end shifting of the curtain, and thereby retain the curtain in a tidy condition.

Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of pole wherein the hanging devices thereof will be entirely concealed, when the curtain is in its supported condition.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curtain pole, showing the hangers applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pole, showing the hanging devices in elevation. Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale through one of the hanging devices. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section through a portion of the pole, showing the means thereof for holding one of the hanging devices against movement.

The pole 1 herein shown is hollow, being preferably constructed of metal, which is rolled in substantially cylindrical form and arranged with its longitudinal edges spaced from each other to provide an intervening guide slot 2 therebetween, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The ends of the pole are closed by removable plugs 6 which are provided with suitable ornamental knobs 5. Spherical hanging devices 7 are mounted in the pole, and as shown, these devices are provided with curtain engaging pins 8 which are formed of wire, each device having terminals 9 which are driven into the member 7 on a diametric line, as shown. to facilitate the attachment of the pins to the member, and as shown, said portions are bent against the adjacent external surface of said member. One terminal of the wire is bent outwardly and in superposed relation with the pointed extremities 10 of the portions 9, as at 11, and then coiled at 12, and then extended, as at 13, to provide a pin which is adapted to engage in a keeper 14 on the other terminal 11. The slot 2 is disposed in the bottom of the pole, and in view thereof the major portion of each of the retaining or attaching pins will be partly extended into the slot, whereby to be concealed, after they have been attached to the curtain.

As shown in the drawings, two separate groups of members 7 are employed, and each group supports a single curtain A.

The pole 1 is provided with a longitudinal series of openings in its top as shown at 16, the said openings being alined with the longitudinal slot 2 in the bottom of the pole and are adapted to interchangeably receive the vertical portion 17 of the brackets 18 which vertical portions, as shown, are extended through the longitudinal slot 2 of the pole. The advantage derived from providing the pole with this longitudinal series of openings is that the pole may be applied to window and door frames of different widths, without necessitating the adjustment of the brackets to different points on the frames, which would be necessary were the pole provided with only one opening for the reception of the vertical portion of the bracket.

With a view to holding the end members 7 against sliding movement in the pole, I arrange the openings 16 in close relation to said members whereby the portions 17 will serve as stops therefor. In this manner, it is evident that the curtains are held against sliding toward the center of the pole and are thereby retained in a tidy condition.

I claim In combination, a curtain pole comprising a tubular member having its top surface provided with a longitudinal series of spaced openings at each of its ends, and opening into the interior of the pole, the said pole having its lower surface provided with a longitudinal slot therein opening into the pole and extending throughout the length of the pole, the said openings and slot being alined, curtain hangers slidably mounted Within the pole and bracket members located at the ends of the pole and adapted to supportthe latter, each of the bracket members having a vertical portion extending through the slot and adapted for interchangeable reception in the openings in the top surface of the pole, whereby to permit the pole to be applied to different Widths of frames and also to allow the said vertical portions of the brackets to engage certain of the cur- 10 EUGENE H.
