Description

Nov. 6, 1923. 1, 72 21 W. I. LEVI CURTAIN SUPPORT Filed Jan. 3]. 1921 Patented Nov. 6, 1923.
UNE'EED STATES WILLIAM I. LEVI, 015 ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CURTAIN SUPPORT.
Application filed January 31, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM I. LEVI, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Curtain Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
This invention relates generally to curtain-supports and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in that type of curtain-supports shown and described in Letters Patent No. 1,351,919, issued to me on September 7, 1920. the principal object of vide a curtain-support which may be attached in operative curtain-supporting position upon a window-frame, casing, or the like not only with ease and convenience, but also without marring or defacing the frame or casing, and from which curtains, drapes, or the like are designed to hang neatly and attractively and in spaced relation from the window.
,Yith the above and other objects in View, my present invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of a curtain-support embodying my invention, shown in connection with a windowframe;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the curtain-support shown in operative curtainsupporting position on the window-frame;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on approximately the line 3-3, Fig ure 1, and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on approximately the line 4-4, Figure 3.
Referring now more in detail to the said drawing, which illustrates a practical embodiment of my invention and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, A indicates a hollow rod or bar comprising two complementing members 1 and 2 adapted to fit for the most part telescopically one within the other, as shown, whereby the rod A is free- 1y lengthwise or longitudinally adjustable, each member 1 and 2 being laterally and preferably arcuately bent at its outer end,
my present invention being to pro- Serial No. 441,263.
1 as at 1 and 2,respectively, so that when concealed within, and attached atits opposite ends to the pins 3 of, the members 1 and 2 of rod A, is a coiled spring 4 of suitable elasticity, rod A when adjustably re duced to its shortest length and spring 4 when in normal or unstretched condition being substantially of equal length.
Tightly fitting upon and closing the outer ends of the rod- members 1 and 2, are plug caps 55, each provided longitudinally with a slot 6.
Adapted to fit fiatwise upon the opposite side members of a window-frame or the like, such as the window-frame F illustrated, are small plate-sections 77, each of which is formed with a lateral extension 8 adapted to tightly, but preferably removably, fit in the slots 6 of the end-caps 5. 7
Each plate 7 is also formed or provided with suitable outwardly projecting windowframe engaging hooks 99, each formed preferably of a single piece or section of suitable wire preferably bent to the shape shown.
It will be evident that, through the engagement of the ends of the spring 4 with the capped or closed ends of the rod A,rod A will be adjusted in length as spring 4 is stretched or extended; and accordingly, in use or operation, the plates 77 being first engaged at their projections 8 with the capped ends of the rod A, as spring 4 is stretched to permit the plates 7-7 to be fitted fiatwise upon, and the hooks 99 to engage, the opposite side-members of the window-frame F illustrated, the rod- members 1 and 2 will be spread apart and rod A correspondingly lengthened to provide the window-frame with a pole upon which a curtain, drape, or the like may be conveniently hung and suspended neatly, attractively, and in suitably spaced relation relatively to the window of the frame, the resiliency of the stretched spring 4, exerted through the hooks 9 upon the window-frame, firmly holding the pole or rod A in curtainsupport ing position. It will be obvious that, by slightly further extending the spring 4, the
hooks 9 may" when required be disengaged from the windowirame and spring 4; and rod A then permitted to return to normal length.
My new curtain-support comprises few parts, is simple in construction, and is inexpensive of manufacture; and by my curtain-support I do away with the" use of nails, screws, or other such fastening members and provide acurtain-support which may with facility and convenience be operatively engaged in curtain-supporting position upon the window-frame or the like by any house wife.
I am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my eurtainsupport may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain-support comprising a telescopic pole laterally bent at its ends, so that the major portion of the pole, when the pole is in curtain-supporting position, will stand away from the window, and a coiled spring ex tending lengthwise within, and having engagement at its ends with, both members of the pole, in combination with means for detachably securing the support upon a window-frame .or the like, said attaching means including closure-plugs disposed tightly upon the opposite ends of the pole, each of said plugs being axially slotted, plates adapted for fiatwise disposition upon the windoweframe, lateral extensions on the plates projecting into the slots of the closure plugs and thereby having engagen'ient with the pole, and hooks projecting from the plates for detachable engagement with the window-frame 2. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain-support comprising a telescopic pole laterally bent at its ends, so that the major portion of the pole, when the pole is in curtain-supporting position, will stand away from the window, and a coiled spring ex tending lengthwise within, and having engagement at its opposite ends with, both members of the pole, in combination with means adapted for detachable engagement vith the pole for detachably securing the support upon a window-frame or the like, said means including closure-plugs disposed tightly upon the opposite ends of the pole, each of said plugs being axially slotted, plates adaptedfor flatwise removable disposition upon the window-frame, lateral extensions on the plates projecting slidably into the slots of the closure-plugs and thereby having removable engagement with the pole. and hooks projecting from the plates for detachable engagement with the windowframe.
WILLIAM I. LEVI.
