Description
UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR F. STEDMAN, OF WESTFIELD, NEW YORK.
||V| PROVE'M ENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,944, dated November 1, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Oscnn F. STEDMAN of Westfield, in the county of Chautauqua, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash- Boilers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciication.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the construction of an apparatus or attachment to be placed within a common wash-boiler and used in connection therewith.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical section.
A represents a movable false bottom or plate, attached to and supported by segmental end pieces, B B, which pieces rest upon the bottom 'of thev boiler. The plate A is made of a length to ll the space in the boiler longitudinally, but does not till the space laterally, the sides being somelittle distance from the sides of the boiler, to give space for the water to pass between it and the sides of the boiler. This plate is provided at each edge with a perpen dicular ange, O, extending downward, the ends of said flan ges being attached to the ends ofthe segmental end pieces or supports, B B. The flanges C C are made not so wide as the end pieces, so that when the apparatus is n position there is quite a space between the lower edge of the flange and the bottom of the boiler.
The segmental end pieces, B B, are constructed so as to project upward a little distance above the flanged plate A, and across the center of said flanged plate is placed a strip or bar, D, corresponding in height to the projectionv upward of the end pieces, and upon these rests another false bottom or plate, G, which is of a size and shape corresponding with the inside ot' the boiler, and which is perforated with numerous holes to admit of the passage of water through them.
The perforated plaie G is not attached to the end pieces or cross-bar, but rests loosely upon them, so as to be removable at pleasure. This arrangement, as will be seen, constitutes a double false bottom composed of the flanged plate A and the perforated plate G, separated from each other, and having a space perpendicularly between them.
From cach end of the flanged plate A, and passing through it, rises a tapering pipe or tube, J, wider at the bottom and bent inward at the top, for the purpose of conveying the hot suds forced by the action of the steam from below to the space above the perforated plate, pouring4 it upon the clothes, which are placed upon the top of said perforated plate or bottom.
The perforated plate G is provided at each eud with a large orifice corresponding to the upright tubes, so that it may be slipped over action of steam, directly to the openings ot the upright tubes, through which it rises, and, being poured upon the clothes, passes through them, and downward through the perforated plate, p ast the flanged plate, to the bottom of the boiler, to be again operated upon by the steam, thus causing the circulation to go on with Wonderful rapidity, and cleansing the clothes thoroughly without any 'rubbing.
The particular advantages of my arrangement are, that there is more rapidity of circulation caused by the operation of the flanged plate, and the parts being detachable from each other allows it to be easily cleaned and dried after using, which, when made of tin, is `very desirable.
Having thus fully described 'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t l. In connection with a wash-boiler, the construction of a double false bottom composed of two parallel horizontal plates, the lower one being provided at each edge with a perpendieular flange, C, or its equivalent, substantially iu the manner and for the purpose described.
2. The perforated plate G, in combination with the end pieces, B B, and cross-bar D, and made detachable and removable, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the flanged plate A with its end pieces, B B, and oross-bar D, in connection with the perforated plate G and tubes J J, substantially in the manner described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of September, 1870.
OSCAR F. STEDMAN.
Vitnesses JOHN C. MIN'roN, W. S. HINKLEY.
