HERMAN J. DRUFFEL, OF CHICAGO, rntinois.
- ADJUSTABLE SHADE-ROLLER SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed March 28, 1913. Serial No. 757,330.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN J. DRUFFEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shade-Roller Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for adjustably supporting window shades and has for its object the production of a supporting mechanism of this character which will be of simple and economical construction and eiiicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a window frame in conjunction with which isarranged a shade supported by mechanism embodying my invention, Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections taken through said win dow frame looking in opposite directions, Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail side elevation of the upper end portion of one of the guide members included in the construction, Fig. 5 is a front elevation thereof, Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 5 of another of the guide members embodying my invention, Fig. 7 is a section taken on line a;00 of Fig. 6.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings especially Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, comprises elongated guide members 1 of channel construction which are arranged at the inner sides of the vertical bars or side members of the window frame 2 at the upper end of the latter, said guide members being rigidly secured in position by screws or other suitable fastening means. Slidably mounted in the guide members 1 at the respective sides of the window frame are supporting members 3 and 4 respectively, also preferably of channel form as shown in Fig. 7. The sides oft-he channel members 1 extend over the lateral edge portions of the members 3 and 4 serving to lock the same in position in said guide members permitting however of free vertical movement. The supporting members 8 and 4 are provided with slots 5 and 6 respectively for engagement with the t-runnions provided at the respective ends of the shade roller 7 The slot 5, which engages with the squared or flattened trunnion of the shade roller opens laterally as shown at- 5 to permit of engagement and disengagement of the trunnion, when said opening 5' of said slot 5 is in registration with the opening 5 formed at the upper end of the corresponding guide member by cutting away the adjacent side thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Except when the member 3 is at its upper terminal of movement in the corresponding member 1, the side of said channel adjacent to the opening 5 of the slot 5 will serve to close said slot and thus insure against accidental displacement of the roller trunnion from said slot. The supporting members 3 and at are supported in the guide members 1 by means of flexible cords 8 and 9 respectively. Said cords 8 and 9 pass upwardly from said supporting members over channel rollers 10 and 11 mounted in the upper ends of said guide members, the cord 8 passing across the upper end of the window frame adjacent the under side of the upper bar thereof and passing also over the roller 11 as clearly shown in the several views, said roller being of the double type, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 in order to accommodate both cords. Said cords pass downwardly from said roller, the same being connected with a ring 12 which is adapted for engagement with any one of a plurality of vertically spaced headed studs 13 which are secured to the window frame as shown. lVith this arrangement it will be seen that the cords S and 9 will serve to support the members 3 and 4 and hence the shade roller which is carried thereby. Vertical adjust ment of the shade roller may thus be effected by simply manipulating the ends of said cords connected with the ring 12 and said shade roller may be fastened in its position of vertical adjustment by engagement of said ring with the corresponding stud 13. Said studs are headed as shown in order to prevent accidental disengagement of the ring 12 therefrom.
With aconstruction then as set forth a shade roller may he supported at any vertical position desired and to which position the same may be adjusted and locked with ease and expedition.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a window frame, of vertically disposed channel guide members secured thereto at opposite sides there of; members slidably mounted in said guides and having slots for engagement with the trunnions at the ends of the shade roller, one of said slots opening laterally, the adjacent side of the corresponding channel serving to close said slot to prevent displace ment of the trunnion therefrom; and means for adjusting said supporting members in said guides and for locking the same in positions of adjustment, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a window frame, of vertically disposed channel guide members secured thereto at opposite sides thereof; members slidably mounted in said guides and having slots for engagement with the trunnions at the respective ends of the shade roller, one of said slots opening laterally, the adjacent side of the corresponding channel serving to close said slot to prevent displacement of the trunnion therefrom, a portion of said channel side being cut away for registration with said slot to permit of disengagement of said trunnion from said slot; and means for adjusting said supporting members in said guides and for locking the same in positions of adjustment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN J. DRUFFEL.
