COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH cm. WASHINGTON. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J CAN-NAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIG-NOR T0 HEN-RY LIKLY & COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A GORPOR-ATION OF NEW YORK.
HAT-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Febi 17, 1914.
Application filed August 21, 1912. Serial N 0; 716,176.
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Supporting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, and to the refercure-numerals marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in hat supporting devices such as employed in trunks, traveling cases, and other similar apparel carrying devices, for receiving and transporting ladies hats and it has for its object to provide a device of simple construction that will enable a hatto be snugly and safely packed against the wall of the trunk, irrespective of the position of the crown of the hat relatively to its rim and trimmings, and in such a manner as to use as little space as pcssible, and at the same time prevent crushing or otherwise damaging the hat.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described. the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a trunk, having attached to one of its vertical walls a hat supporter constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment in my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line aa of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder, and Fig. t is a plan view of the support.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views, indicate the same parts.
The invention is illustrated as applied to a trunk, or receptacle, comprising a bottom, rear wall 2, and a cover 3, suitably hinged to the rear wall 2 in the usual manner. The hat supporter may be applied to the top, bottom or sides of the receptacle, and in the present instance I have shown it on the rear wall 2. It preferably comprises a support which may be permanently secured to the wall, and may consist of a plate 4, having an outer flange 5, which is riveted to the wall as shown in Fig. 3. The plate 4 is further provided with a central opening for a pur pose presently to be mentioned, and is adaptecltoreceive the hat holder. To this end, it is provided with an alinin'g means for enabling the holder to be adjusted angularly "and longitudinally thereof-; The alining means may consist of a plurality of radially disposed projections, as designated at 6 and formed preferably by indenting the plate 4 at such points. This permits the proper positioning of the holder on the support so that it may be adjusted to bring it to any de sired point on the wall between the top, bottom and ends, whereby to accommodate any one of the many forms of hats in which, the crown is generally disposed at some point other than the center, with respect to the rim.
The holder consists of a pad or cushion 7 adapted to enter the crown of the hat, the latter being attached to it by pinning or otherwise, said pad being mounted on the base 8. The holder also includes an arm 9 to which the base 8 is secured in any suitable manner. The arm 9 is preferably slotted longitudinally as indicated at 10, the slot being of suflicient width to receive the projections 6 on the support as shown in Fig. 2. The arm may be turned at any angle on the support so as to engage any pair of projections and may also be moved longitudinally of the projections to raise or lower it, when arranged on a vertical wall. That is to say, the holder may have a longitudinal as well as an angular adjustment on the support, being retained in position by one of the pairs of projections 6.
In order to secure the holder fixedly on the support, I provide the latter with a central opening 11, preferably squared, to receive the correspondingly shaped part of a bolt 12 which passes through the slot 10 of the arm 9 and is held in place by a nut 13. Immediately adjacent to the arm 9. there is disposed a spring washer 14, and 15 is a centering disk which engages said washer and receives the nut 13, as shown in Fig. 3.
Other means may be employed for attaching the holder on the support, and I do not limit myself to the particular form of construction described for alining it on the support, as the essential feature of my invention resides in enabling the holder to be readily adjusted, both angularly and longitudinally and to be rigidly held in its adjusted position.
I claim as my invention: 1. In a hat supporting device, the combination with a support having a plurality 1 of radially and oppositely disposed alining devices thereon, of a holder provided With an arm engaging a pair of said alining devices, said arm being longitudinally adjust- 1 radially and oppositely disposed circular projections thereon, a holder embodying an arm engaging a pair of said projections, the arm being longitudinally adjustable relal5 tively to the support, and means for securing the arm on the support.
JOHN J. OANNAN.
able on the support, and means for securing the arm on the support.
2. In a hat supporting device, the combination With a support having a series of Witnesses:
