WHEEL-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1910.
Patented Jan. 30,1912.
Serial No. 544,591.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Roy B. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delmont, in the county of IVestmoreland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Forms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wheel forms or devices whereon wheels are assembled.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel form of device of this character especially adapted for assembling that type of wheels wherein the rim is of less Width than the length of the hub and is positioned centrally of the hub, and wherein the spokes are passed through the rim, screwed into the hub and then secured by suitable means to said rim.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like char acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention showing a wheel supported thereon. Fig. 2 is a face view of the device with a wheel supported thereon. Fig. 3 is a side elevation with the wheel removed. Fig. 4 is a section taken diametrically through the invention, showing a wheel supported thereon. Fig. 5 is a View of the form removed from the frame.
The frame supporting this device consists of a base 9 having spaced posts 10 and 11 secured thereto, the former being fixedly secured by means of a brace 10 and the latter being connected to the base by means of a hinge 11 and retained in its upright position by means of a hook 11 which is connected at one end to the base by means of a staple 11, and engages at its other end a staple 11 carried by the post. Each of these posts is provided with a suitable bearing 12 and in these bearings is carried a shaft 13. Keyed upon the shaft 13 is a form comprising a central disk 14 wherefrom radiate spokes 15 which carry at their outer ends an annular plate 16. The annular plate 16 is displaced laterally with reference to the disk 14 by having the spokes 15 inclined relative to the disk. Projecting from the annular plate 16 and away from the disk 14 is a series of pins 17. At 18 is indicated, in general, a wheel of the type described and it will be observed that the construction of the form is such that when the end of the wheel hub rests against the disk 14 the rim of the wheel will rest on the pins 17 and bear against the annular plate 16 so that the rim is thus properly positioned relative to the hub. It will also be observed that the pins 17 are of such distance from the shaft 13 that the wheel rim and hub are held in proper spaced relation to each other. The wheel rim is secured in position by means of suitable clamps 19 which serve to hold the rim firmly against the plate 16.
In the assembling of the wheel on a device of this character the hinged post 11 is folded backward and the wheel hub slipped over the shaft 13, the latter being of proper size to accommodate said hub. The hub is 80 positioned closely against the disk 14 and the rim is then placed on the pins 17. The post 11 is replaced in position and the rim clamped to the plate 16 by the clamps 19. The spokes of the wheel are then slipped through the rim and screwed into the hub, being afterward secured to the rim by riveting or by means of suitable nuts. It will be observed that the lateral displacement of the plate 16 with reference to the disk 14 is such that the rim is positioned centrally of the hub when clamped to the plate 16 and when the hub bears against the disk 14. There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the kind described, a base, a post rigidly connected to the base, a second post hingedly connected to the base, staples respectively carried by the base and the last mentioned post, and a hook connected at one end to one of the staples and adapted for engagement with the hook staple for supporting the post in an upright position, said post being respectively formed with bearings, a shaft journaled in said bearings, a wheel form carried on said shaft and comprising a central disk, dished spokes radiating from 110 said disk, an annular plate carried on the ends of the spokes, said plate being disposed laterally with reference to the disk by the dishing of said spokes to such an extent that a rim carried on the bars Will rest against the plate and lie centrally of a hook carried on the shaft and bearing against the disk, spaced pins projecting from said plate away from said disk and located at a distance from the outer edge of the annular plate, whereby said annular plate constitutes an adapted for engagement With the plate and the rim to hold the latter against the former.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
