WHIP-SOCKET AND LINE-HOLDER.
releases.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1914.
Application filed January 30, 1913. I Serial No. 745,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD V. Hovmn'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Browerville, in the county of Todd, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVhip-Sockets and Line-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved whip socket and line holder.
The essential object of the invention is evolved in the provision of a device of the above character which embodies a socket which facilitates the placing of a whip therein and which is provided with novel means in the form of a clamp for simultaneously gripping the butt of the whip and securing the reins in position, as well as preventing the whip from jolting out on rough roads and rendering it more easily removable for use.
/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides more particularly in the peculiar combinations and arrangements of parts which will be partly illustrated as a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification, although the invention is protected for all desirable changes and uses within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved whip socket and line holder shown in position for holding a whip and a pair of reins. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof with the reins and whip removed. Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view.
In illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, my improved whip socket and line or rein holder embodies the socket member 10 which consists of a hollow tubular body which is open at the top and provided with a flared mouth portion 11 serving to facilitate the entrance of the butt end of the whip 12 into the socket. The lower end of the tubular body is provided with an opening 13 which serves as a drain opening, the same having a circular central portion 14 and side extensions 15 extending diametrically of the body. Depending from diametrically opposite points or sides of the socket body and at the ends of the slot 13 are hangers 16 through which a pivot rod 17 is movably engaged, the same carrying on its extremities which extend beyond the sides of the body, a clamping member 18 which is movable on the pivot. The clamping member consists of a substantially inverted U-frame, the lower extremities of the side portions 19 of which engage the extremities of the pivot and the upper end of which has its side portions arcuately curved outwardly and upwardly to form arms 20 between which a roller 21 is rotatably mounted.
An opening 22 is formed in the front face of the socket body, through which the wheel or roller 21 may pass for frictionally contacting with the butt of the whip to prevent the same from jolting out on rough roads and at the same time rendering the whip capable of being more easily inserted or removed from the socket. In order to hold the clamp in this position spring means are provided, the same consisting of a coiled spring 23 which is mounted on the pivot, one end being anchored to a side member of the clamp and the other end to the bottom of the socket, thus resiliently holding the clamp in operative position with the roller against the whip.
The upper end or bight portion of the clamp is provided with a depending gripping lug 24 by which the clamp may be moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 or swung downwardly on its pivot for the engagement of the lines or reins 25 around the socket and between the clamp and the socket so that the normal tendency of the clamp to move toward the socket will create a gripping action to prevent disengagement of the lines or reins.
I claim:
1. The combination with a whip socket having an opening through one side; of a clamping member pivoted to the lower portion of the socket and a centrally journaled roller at the upper end of the clamp to operate through the opening for engaging a whip held in the socket and clamping the reins against the exterior face of the socket.
2. The combination with a whip socket having an opening through one side; of a clamping member pivoted to the lower portion of the socket, a centrally journaled roller at the upper end of the clamp to operate through the opening for engaging a whip held in the socket for clamping the reins against the exterior face of the socket,
hangers depending from the bottom of the socket pivotally supporting the clamping member and spring means carried beneath the socket to hold the same in operative position.
3. The combination with a whip socket having an opening adjacent its upper end, of a U-shaped clamping member having its lower ends pivoted to each side of the lower end of the socket and a roller rotatably carried by the bight portion of the clamping member to operate through the opening to engage a whip.-
t. The combination with a whip socket having an opening adjacent its upper end of a clamping arm pivoted on each side of the lower end of the socket, inwardly and upwardly directed extensions at the free ends of the arms, a roller journaled between said extensions to operate through the said opening to engage the whip and means for resiliently holding the arms with relation to the socket.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
