PATENT FFICE.
REIN-HOLDER AND WHIP-SOCKET.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLorrn I. DENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders and lVhip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved combination rein holder and whip socket for use on buggies and other vehicles both for holding the whip and for holding the reins, the said invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. I
in the accompanying drawing :-F igure 1. is a perspective view of a combined rein holder and whip socket'constructed in ac cordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view of the pivoted rein holder element, the handle being omitted and a part being broken away. i
In accordance with my invention, I provide a standard 1 which is here shown as cylindrical in form and the lower portion of which may be secured to one side of the body of the vehicle by means of a clip cap 2 and a clip 3, the said clip cap receiving the lower end of the said standard. On one side of the standard, at a suitable distance from the upper end thereof is a cylindrical offset 4: which has a vertical bore 5, the upper end of which is open, the said bore constituting a socket for the reception of the butt of the whip. The arm or upper end portion 6 of the standard, which extends above the whip socket, is channeled in its outer face, corresponding with one side of the whip socket as at 7, the said channel being concaved transversely and serving to guide the butt of the whip and facilitating the placing thereof in the socket, as will be understood. The opposite side of the arm 6 of the standard is recessed as at 8 for a suitable distance, said recess forming a lower shoulder 9 and an upper shoulder 10 and the said recessed side of the said arm 6 being semi-cylindrical in form cross sectionally, or substantially so and presenting a convex 0r outwardly rounded surface 11 op- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 30, 1909.

posite the concave or hollow channel 7. The said upper arm of the standard in addition to providing the guide channel 7 for the butt of the whip forms also a fixed jaw for gripping the reins. The other jaw 12 is pivoted to the arm (5, at 13, and is shaped cross sectionally to snugly fit the outer curved side of the arm. An arm 14 forms a part of the jaw 12 and projects outwardly and downwardly therefrom and is provided with a handle 15. A spring 16 of inverted U-shape is interposed between the arm 11 and arm 6 and has its ends engaging respectively the upper end of the handle 15 and a shoulder formed at the base of a recess formed in the lower portion of the arm (3. It will be understood that the action of the spring is to close the pivoted jaw against the fixed jaw formed by the upper arm 6 of the standard so as to cause said standard arm and said pivoted jaw to grip and hold the reins between them when desired.
A combined rein holder and whip socket thus constructed is exceedingly cheap and simple, is very strong and durable and will be found of great utility to drivers of vehicles.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed, is
A combined rein holder and whip socket comprising a standard, a whip socket at one side of the standard near the upper end thereof, an arm at the upper end of the standard in line therewith, said arm being channeled in the side facing the whip socket to form a guide for directing the butt end of the whip into the socket, said arm also constituting a fixed jaw and having a recess in the side opposite the channel forming upper and lower shoulders, a second jaw pivoted to said arm, a handle fitted to the lower end of the pivoted aw, and an inverted U- shaped spring inserted between the lower ends of the pivoted and fixed jaws and having the ends of its members engaging respectij'ely the lower shoulder of said arm and the upper end of the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
