(No Model.) v A. COTTRELL.
REIN HOLDER.
No. 334,333. Patented June 7, 1887.

UNITED I STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
.ABRAHAM COTTRELL, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,336, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed April 18, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, ABRAHAM COTTRELL, a citizenof the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of l'ngham and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Rein Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved driving rein holder; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 an end view thereof.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective device for holding driving-reins; and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the suitable bracket constructed of metal and provided with means for attaching it to the dash-board, dash-iron,or other convenient portions of a vehicle. In order to attain this end the bracket A is formed with a U shaped yoke, B, provided with set-screws a, and within the yoke is located a flat metal spring, 0, bent in U shape,as shown, whereby the bracket can be conveniently attached to the dashboard.
The yoke B is of sufficient width to protect the dash-iron, and the set-screws a, which adjust the tension of the spring 0 against the dash-iron, hold the device securely in place. If preferred, the yoke and spring can be dispensed with and a plate with screws substituted, so as to provide means for attaching it to a wooden dash-board; or the device can be so adjusted or means provided to suit any convenient method of attachment to the vehicle.
In the means shown the spring 0 is simply Serial No. 235,228. (No model.)
one end bent around an extension, 0, of the bracket, as shown at d; and the opposite end of said spring terminates in a thumb'piece, e, for convenience of operating the spring.
In operation the rein is held between the clamping arm D and springE, the spring pressing it firmly against thearm, so that it is impossible to sli p, the rein being quickly and easily inserted in place between the clamping arm and spring and with the same ease disengaged. The reins lie perfectly flat when held by the device without roughening the edges of the rein or otherwise injuring them.
The spring E, as will be noticed, is simply bent around the extenson c and not permanently attached thereto; hence the spring can be removed by depressing the spring sufficiently to force it through the opening b,thercby replacing it with a new one. This is considered of importance, from the fact that springs of different strength may be used so as to adapt them to reins of dilferent thicknesses or shape; also, should the spring become broken or other wise injured, a new one can be substituted.
If preferred, the U spring 0 can begletached from the yoke 13 and the latter used without it, the setscrcws a acting as clamping-screws.
A device constructed as above described is both simple and durable, readily attached to the dashboard or other portions of a vehicle and detachedvwhen desired, without marring or injuring the object to which it is attached, and the device can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost, thereby bringing it within the reach of all requiring such a device.
Having now fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In adriving-rein holder, the combination, with a suitable spring having a hooked end and a slotted clamping-arm, of a bracket pro vided with an extension, said hooked end of the spring fitting over the same, whereby it is held to the bracket without the use of bolts or other fasteniugs and capable of ready removal therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a driving-rein holder, a bracket pro 2 estate vided with a slotted clainping-arin, and a flat In testimony that i claim the above i have re spring extending through the slot thereof and hereunto subscribed my name in the presence detachably connected to an extension of the of two Witnesses; bracket, in combination with means for secur- 5 5 ing said bracket to the dash-board or other por ABRAHAM (JOTIRELL,
