GRANVILLE BARTLETT, OF RUSHVILLE, INDIANA.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,772, dated January 28, 1896.
I Application filed August 23, 1895. Serial No. 560,252. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GRANVILLE BARTLETT, of Rushville, in the county of Rush and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved rein-holder and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my rein-holder applied to a dashboard of a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same. Fig. 3 is a side View of the holder detached, and Fig. 4is a section on line 4 4, Fig 2.
The rein-holder is formed of wire and has side lengths which are adjusted on opposite sides of the dashboard, secured properly thereto, and have their ends connected by a cross-bar extended over the edge of the dashboard and having a tension toward and against such dashboard. As shown the length of wire is bent at its. middle, forming the cross-bar A, returned or looped adjacent to said cross-bar, forming the finger-holds B, from the lower ends of which extend the reinholding portions 0, which are crimped from end to end, so that when the rein is set at any desired point along the holding portion it will be held thereat by the crimp in which it may happen to be set. These crimped holding portions merge into the coils D, from which extend connecting portions E, having seats e for the clip or hook F and connecting the coils D with the coils G, from which the extended shanks H project, such shanks being provided at their ends with eyes h or being otherwise adapted for engagement by the stirrup I, which bends over the edge of the dashboard J and has at its ends hook-like portions 5 which engage with the shanks H,
as shown.
In securing the rein-holder to the dashboard the clip or hook F presses above the connecting portion E, and the stirrup I bears under the shanks H, producing a simple easily-adjusted fastening for securing the reinholder so its cross-bar and holding portions will have a strong downward tension.
In use the finger-holds form convenient portions to be grasped and lifted by one hand while with the other the reins may be placed across the dashboard under the holding portions to any desired position, where they will be held by the tension thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters portions having a seat for the securing clip or hook, the extended shanks and the stirrup adapted to fit over the dashboard and to connect at its ends with the shanks substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the dashboard the rein-holder composed of wire bent upon itself forming the cross-bar and the side portions having separate or free ends a stirrup connecting the latter and devices by which to secure the side portions to and on opposite sides of the dashboard at a point between their ends substantially as set forth.
3. A rein-holder composed of the side lengths forming rein-holding arms adapted to extend along the opposite sides of the dashboard, and having at one end a connecting cross-bar and upturned portions joining same to the main portions of the side lengths whereby the latter may rest at a point below the edge of the dashboard substantially as shown and described.
4. A rein-holder comprising side lengths adapted to rest on oppositesides of the dashboard and crimped forming seats and securing means whereby said crimped side lengths may be held at a point below the edge of the dashboard substantially as set forth.
GRANVILLE BARTLETT.
