PAUL R. STIBBE, OF BALATON, MINNESOTA.
` LINE on REIN CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Application led April 4, 1916. Serial No. 88,940.
V tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps, and particularly to line or rein clamps for carriages or wagons.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and cheap device which can be quickly and easily attached to or removed from the front end gate of a wagon, or the dashboard of a carriage, and which will eifectively hold the reins off the horse when the driver has left the vehicle.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be quickly and easily adjusted so as to hold the reins more or less tightly, as desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying` drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved rein clamp; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a portion of the end gate at the front of a wagon, to which my rein cla-mp is attached. The rein clamp includes a horizontal base member 11 to each end of which is connected a clamp 12 for embracing the upper edge of the end gate, and equipped with the bolt or set screw 13 for holding the clamp in position. EX- tending upwardly from one end of the base is an inclined member 14 and extending vertically downward from the upperendof this member and formed Vintegrally therewith is a member 1,5, the lower end being formed with a laterally directed foot 16 suitably secured to the base'member. At the juncture of the members '14 and 15 there is an outwardly curved portion 17 which cooperates with the similarly formed and oppositely directed portion 18 at the upper end of a member 19, for the purpose of forming a V-shaped entrance 20 between said members 15and 19. This member 19 is disposed against the outer face oi' the memberl 15 and has its lower end hinged to the lower Hend of said member 15, as shown at 21. At points about midway of the length of the members 15 and 19 are formed registering openings 22 and 23 through which there is disposed abolt 24 having its head engaging against the inner face of the member 15. The remaining portion of the bolt extends a suitable distance beyond the outer face of the member 19 and carries thereon a coil spring 25 which bears with one end against the member 19, and its other end against the washer 26 held on the outer end of the bolt by means of a nut 27. By tightening the nut 27, the tension of the spring 25 can be increased, thereby increasing the pressure of the member 19 against the member 15.
Attention is called to the fact that the members 11, 1-1 and 15 are integral, thus greatly cheapening the manufacture of the device. By means of the clamp 12 the device may be applied to end gates of diii'erent thicknesses.
It will of course be understood that the reins are placed in the entrance opening 20 and pressed downwardly between the members 15 and 19, the spring 25 being of suiicient strength to holdthe reins from accidental vwithdrawal therefrom.
That is claimed is:
A rein holder comprising an integrally formed horizontal base portion, a vertical standard portion, an inclined brace portion, inverted U-shaped members secured to the opposite ends of the base, an eye bolt eX- tending vertically from the lower end of the standard portion, a vert-ical jaw member having the lower end bifurcated and transversely apertured to straddle said eye-bolt, a transverse pivot disposed through the eye bolt and bifurcated end of the jaw, a bolt carried by and extending at right angles from the intermediate portion of the standard, said jaw member being formed with .5 element of the bolt, and the upper end of the Witnesses:
an opening,l to receive the bolt therethrough, In testimony whereof, I affix my signa# YVsaid bolt having an adjustable element on ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
its other end a resilient element disposed Y between the jaw member and the adjustable PAUL R' STIBBE jaw member and the standard member being E. A. RoLLoFF, i curved into divergent relation. E. A. BLOCK.
