BAG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE '1, 1913.

TTTTE @TA BAG-HOLDER.
Application filed June 7, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CUnTIs M. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to holders for paper bags, etc, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder of simple structure adapted to be applied to a fixed support and which in turn is provided with means for securely gripping and retaining bags or the like, in stores, stands, or other places.
With the above object in view the holder comprises an approximately U-shaped member having converging side portions. This member is made from spring or resilient material, preferably sheet metal, and it is thinned somewhat at its intermediate portion. or bent in order that the end portions may flex or have movement with relation to each other. One side portion of the member is provided with a perforation through which a securing device may be passed for the purpose of fixing a holder upon its support. The end portions of the member terminate in oppositely disposed extremities, one of which is pointed .and the other is relatively broad but provided between its ends with an incision adapted to receive said point.
In operation the edge portions of several bags are slipped between the extremities of the member and the point of one of the members will engage the bags and hold the same.
in the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the various features thereof.
The bag holder comprises a member 1 which is approximately U-shaped in edge elevation and which is provided with converging side portions 2. The intermediate portion or bend of the member 1 is slightly thinner than the side portion 2 in order that the said member may possess su'liicient resiliency or flexibility. The member 1 is preferably formed from sheet metal. One of the side portions 2 terminates in an in- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly disposed extremity 3 which is in the form of a point. The other side portion terminates in an inwardly disposed extremity 4 which is relatively broad and which is provided between its ends with an incision 5 which is adapted to receive the pointed extremity 3. That side portion 2 which is provided with the incised extremity 4 is further provided with a perforation 6 through which a screw or other securing device may be passed for the purpose of attaching the holder to a support.
When the holder is properly supported its operation in use is as follows. When it is desired to insert the edge portions of bags between the side portions 2, the portion 2 which carries the extremity 3 is pulled away from the opposite side portion 2 and the edges of the bags are slipped between the point and the inwardly disposed extremity of the side portion 2 which is fixed to the support. The outer side portion 2 is then released and owing to the resiliency of the material of which the holder is composed, the point 3 is caused to penetrate the bags, and will lie in the incision 5. The edge of the extremity 4} bearing against the outer surface of one of the bags prevents the bags from following the point as the point penetrates the same.
The bags are removed from the holder by pulling them away from the same individually whereby the point tears through the edge portion of the bag.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is A. bag holder comprising a unitary member of resilient material, said member being approximately U-shaped in edge elevation and having converging side portions, the said member at its bend being thinner than at its side portions, the side portions merging into inwardly and oppositely disposed extremities one of which is pointed and the other of which is incised, the said incision being adapted to receive the said point.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
