Description

A. G. DREWELOW.
WHIP HANGER.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV.G,1913.
1,120,182. Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
AWAM v ALBERT C. DREW'ELOW, OF NEW HAMPTON, IOWA.
WHIP-HANGER.
Application filed November 6, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. DREW- ELOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Hampton, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vhip-Ilangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to whip hangers and the primary object is to provide a hooklike member comprising a pair of gripping jaws between which a knotted end of a whip is adapted to be engaged.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means upon the outer ends of the gripping jaws for guiding the end of a whip into position between the jaws.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a novel means upon the hooklike member for connecting the same with a support.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1, represents a erspective view of one manner of supporting my device. Fig. 2, represents a perspective view of another manner of supporting my device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1, represents a single piece of material preferably of resilient wire, which is bent intermediate its ends into a series of convolutions to form an eye 2. The portions of the wire at the opposite sides of the eye extend slightlytoward each other and form a pair of converging depending arms 3 which are bent adjacent their lower ends to provide a pair of hooklike gripping jaws 4. These gripping jaws bear against each other at their point of distortion and diverge toward their outer ends and further have their extreme outer Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Serial No. 799,588.
ends bent inwardly upon themselves in proximate parallel relation to each other to orm guiding members 5.
My device is used in the capacity of a whip hanger as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and is suspended from a nail or the like 6, which engages the eye 2. In attaching a whip to the hook-like member the outer end of the lush of the whip is placed between the guiding members 5 and pushed inwardly between the gripping jaws where the knotted end of the whip is adapted to be seated.
In Fig. 2, of the drawings I have shown my device applied to a thin supporting strip, and in applying the device thereto the convolutions in the wire are engaged upon the opposite sides of the support. The spring action of the coil permits of a grip that is strong enough to support a hat or other medium weight articles. It is obvious from Fig. 2, of the drawings that my device may be applied in the same manner upon the upper edge of a magazine, and suspended from a wire or the like support by engaging the hook-like member upon the same.
I claim A device of the character described comprising a single piece of wire formed intermediate its length into a series of convolutions to provide an eye, a pair of converging arms extending from the opposite sides of said convolutions, a pair of hooklike engaging jaws extending from said arms, and guiding members formed upon said jaws by bending the terminals thereof inwardly upon themselves in proximate parallelrelation to each other, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT C. DREWELOW.
Witnesses:
