WILLIAM FRANKLIN HUTTINGER, OF DUNKIRK, OHIO.
LIFTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1908.
Application filed October 2, 1907. Serial No. 395,572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANKLIN HUTTINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a lifting device designed more particularly for putting up or taking down curtain poles, pictures and the like;
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, light and efiicient lifting device of this kind, by means of which curtain poles, pictures, etc., can be readily put up or taken down While the operator is-standing on the floor.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a handle of such length as will serve the purpose of the invention. In one end of the handle is a socket 6 in which is secured a curtain-pole supporting-device 7, and in the other end of the handle is a socket 8 in which is secured a device 9 for holding the suspension-cord of a picture.
The curtain-pole supporting-device is made of a single piece ofwire the ends of which are brought together and extended in parallelism for a short distance as indicated at 10 to form a shank which is secured in the socket 6. Outside the socket, the two ends of the wire are bent to form two upwardly and outwardly extending arms 11 at the extremities of which the wire is bent rearward and laterally in a downward curve as indicated at 12, and then horizontally to form a cross-bar 13 connecting said curved portions.
The parts 12 form seats or supports for the curtain pole, and by the arrangement herein described they are spaced apart a sufiicient distance to firmly support the pole.
The device for holding the suspension-cord of a picture comprises shanks 14 secured in the socket 8 and each having outside the latter outwardly and oppositely presented arms 15 which are bent laterally at their extremities as indicated at 16 with seats or supports for the cord at the ends of the lateral bends. The cord supports are formed by .looping the wire asindicated at 17 from which the wire is bent back alongside the parts 16, 15 and 14 thus doubling said parts and thereby imparting sufficient strength thereto to support a picture.
To use the implement for hanging or taking down a picture, the position of the handle 5 as shown in the drawing is reversed and the suspension cord of the picture is placed in the seats 17 after which the picture can be readily placed in position or removed.
By reason of its simplicity of construction, the implement can be cheaply manufactured, it is light and easily handled, and by its use curtain poles, pictures and the like can be readily placed in position or removed while the operator is standing on the floor and without resorting to a step-ladder,
I claim:
1. A lifting device comprising a single piece of wire brought together at its ends and extended in parallelism for a distance to form a shank, a pair of arms extending outwardly from the shank in opposite directions, and having downward and laterally curved portions at their extremities, which are parallel and form seats for a curtain-pole, a cross-bar connecting said curved portions, and a handle having in one end a socket to receive the aforesaid shank.
2. A lifting device comprising a handle, a pair of outwardly presented arms at one end thereof and having curtain-pole seats at their ends, a cross-bar connecting said seats, outwardly and oppositely presented arms projecting from the other end of the handle and having lateral bends at their extremities, and cord seats or supports at the ends of the lateral bends.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM FRANKLIN HUTTINGER. Witnesses: WM. I-IARRIs,
JAMES M. DAVIS.
