FRANK R. DINGES, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
GRlPPlNG DEVICE FOR CURTAlN-POLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,627, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed January 9, 1901. Serial No. 42,633. No model.:
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. DINGES, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping Devices for Curtain-Poles, of which the following isafull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in gripping devices for curtain-poles; and it consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section on line 1 1 of Fig. 3, showing the parts in their normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing a curtain-pole seized by the gripper. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device looking to the right on Fig. .1. Fig. 4 is a detached top plan view of the gripping-lever, and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the application of my device to a curtain-pole.
The object of my invention is to construct a gripping device by which curtain-poles may be seized and removed from their supportingbrackets without the necessity of resorting to step-ladders and climbing the latter to gain access to the pole.
In detail the invention may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a bar of any convenient length and shape, having secured at each end the rearwardly-extended and downwardly-bent supportinghooks'2, each covered by a layer or casing of soft rubber 3. Disposed in the line connecting the fixed ends of the hooks 2, at the middle of the bar 1, are the angle-pieces 4 4, between whose outwardly-projecting arms is pivotally mounted the gripping-lever 5, the same having a main curved arm bent oppositely to the hooks 2 and a straight short arm 5, normally pointing upward. The lever 5 5 is normally held in the position indicated in Fig. l bya spring 6, whose one end is secured near the medial portion of the lever and whose opposite end is secured to an eyebolt 7, carried by the bar 1. The free end of the curved arm of the gripping-lever is provided with a softleather base or shoe 8. Stamped integrally with the angle-piece 4 is an extension at", perforated for the reception of a pin 9, carried by a cord or chain 10, secured to the bar, said pin serving to couple the said angle-piece to a hand-pole 11, inserted into a socket 12, formed in the bar 1 to the rear of and immediately adjacent to the angle-pieces 4 4. The free end of the arm 5' has secured thereto one end of a cord or chain 12. The curtain-pole is represented by 13.
When it is desired to remove the curtainpole from the supports over a window-frame or door-frame, the operator seizes the handpole and elevates the gripping device thereto, as indicated in Fig. 5. By drawing on the cord 12 and tilting the lever 5 5 to the dotted position indicated in Fig. 2 to allow for the free passage of the curtain-pole between said lever and the hooks 2 2 and then releasing the cord 12 the spring 6 will draw the lever against the curtain-pole, the latter being now firmly held between the lever and the hooks 2. The pole thus gripped can be removed by the person standing on the floor.
It is to be understood that the device may be used for any kind of a pole-a curtain-pole, a shade-pole, a pole for portieres, and the like.
The rubber casings 3 and the leather shoe 8 are designed to prevent abrasion of the paint and varnish on the curtain-pole.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A curtain-pole gripping device comprising a bar, a rearwardly-extended and downwardly bent supporting-hook at each end thereof, a gripping-lever pivoted at the center of the bar, said lever having a main curved arm bent opposite to the hooks, and a straight arm normally pointing upward, a spring having one end secured to the medial portion of the lever and the opposite end to the bar, a hand-pole for the bar, and a cord secured to the projecting arm of the lever, the parts operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A curtain-pole-gripping device comprising a bar, rearwardly-extending and downwardly-deflected hooks at each end thereof, angle-pieces secured to the bar between the hooks, a lever pivoted between the projecting arms of the angle-pieces, a spring for actuat- IOC 3. Aourtain-pole-gripping device oompris- :0 ing a bar, supporting-hooks at each end thereof, rnbber casings therefor,a spring-controlled gripping-lever pivoted between the hooks, and a leather shoe at the end of the lever substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK R. DINGES.
