To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED RAMMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Poles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to curtain poles and more particularly to curtain poles upon which are mounted rollers carrying clamps, which are adapted to grip the upper edge of a lace or other curtain to be suspended therefrom.

An object of the invention is to provide a curtain pole with rollers movable longitudinally in respect thereto, said rollers carrying means for gripping and holding the upper edge of the drapery to be positioned below said pole.

Another object is to provide a pole which will be light and simple in construction and effectively serve to support curtain holding means movable longitudinally thereon.

Another object is to provide a hollow pole of the above stated character and rollers movable longitudinally thereof, said rollers carrying drapery gripping and holding means suspended therefrom, and, another object is to provide a light, hollow curtain pole with rollers of the spool type movable longitudinally of said pole and resilient means carried by said rollers for supporting curtains, etc.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the roller, showing one of the rollers and the gripping means carried thereby. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional View on the line 38 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the pole which is hollow and of cylindrical form and preferably made of light metal. being bent upwardly and parallel to one another, as shown at 2. The opposite ends of the hollow pole 1 are closed by suitable caps 3, and as the pole may be rested upon brackets of any preferred form, it is deemed unnecessary to show the same upon the drawings, as this forms no part of the invention and may be readily understood.

The rollers consist of a central connecting portion 4 connecting the opposite circular flanges 5, which rest upon the inner surface of the pole 1, adjacent the upwardly turned edges 2 thereof, said rollers being limited in their movement longitudinally of the pole 1 by the caps 3. Passing around the central connecting portion 4 ofeach roller is-the looped end of the spring wire 6 having its opposite ends projecting for some distance through the longitudinal slot of the pole 1 between the oppositely turned edges 2 of said pole and having their lower extremities 7 directed toward one another and passing through the opposite parallel sides 8 of the curtain gripping jaws 9, said sides 8 being bent at right angles to the main or gripping jaws 9 of said curtain grippers. The looped portion of the spring member 6 is of greater diameter than the central portion a of the rollers in order that a certain amount of resiliency will exist between the rollers and drawers. It will be understood that the lower edges of the gripping jaws 9 are resiliently pressed together by the usual spring or springs 10 mounted upon the extremities 7 of the wire 6, inwardly. of the sides 8 of the curtain gripper.

As will be noted, the lower corners of the gripper jaws are provided with teeth 23, which are located practically opposite to one another and serve to more tightly grip the edge of the drapery being held by the jaws, of which each tooth forms apart, the extreme edge of the material being caught above the teeth and prevented from slipping from between the jaws on account of said teeth.

The pole is positioned upon the brackets secured to the window or doorframe or other place where it is desired to hang the drapery and the upper edge of the drapery to be suspended is placed between the lower edges of the gripping jaws 9, it being understood that said lower edges of the jaws are separated by pressing the upper edges thereof together against the tension of the springs thereof. As will be seen the rollers may be moved longitudinally of the pole to the points desired before the curtain grippers suspended therefrom are placed in gripping engagement with the drapery. It will also be seen that at any time it is desired to move the drapery to one side or to draw the same toward the center of the opening, a slight pull in the proper direction will readily move the rollers accordingly.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a curtain pole and rollers movable longitudinally thereon and carrying curtain grip pers, which will be effective in use and easily operated. It will also be evident that as the parts are of simple formation they may be readily and cheaply manufactured and, as they are also durable, the length of their usefulness will be practically indefinite. It will also be seen that this construction of curtain or drapery supporting means is adapted for use with curtains and draperies of various types used in front of windows, doorways, etc.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow cylindrical pole having trackways and rollers adapted to travel over said trackways; of spring wires loosely coiled over said rollers and the ends thereof extending downwardly therefrom,

and resilient spring actuated gripping jaws pivoted to the lower extremities of said suspending means.

2. Means for supporting draperies comprising in combination a hollow cylindrical pole having the underside thereof flattened and the adjacent edges bent upwardly and spaced to form a slot, rollers within said pole adapted to travel over the flattened portion of the latter, suspending means loosely mounted over said rollers and extending downwardly through the slot, and spring actuated gripping jaws pivoted to the lower ends of said suspending means.
