FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23,1913.
Application filed December 7, 1912. Serial No. 735,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVaL'rnR L. MCCAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deering (Post-Office Box 86,) in the county of Pemiscott and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a metallic fence post which is used in combination with a plastic base and has for its object the produetion of an efficient means for resisting any torsional strain upon the post.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efficient reinforcing means carried by the upper end of the plastic base whereby to strengthen the end of the base which receives the post.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the post and base. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the post and base showing the anchoring member in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the plastic base partially broken away and the lower end of the post. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44: of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals it will be seen that the metallic post consists of a back member 1 which is provided with a centrally located integrally formed rib 2. This rib 2 is provided with the usual wire receiving notches 3 which may be clamped upon the wire after the same has been placed therein for holding the same. The plastic base consists of a rectangular body 4 which is provided at its upper end with a reinforcing band 5 which is adapted to prevent the upper portion of the post from cracking or breaking away. The base is molded and provided with a substantially T-shaped receiving socket 6 which is adapted to receive the metallic post.
In order to hold the post within the socket 6 the base is provided with a transversely extending aperture 7 while the rib 2 is provided with an opening 8 which is adapted to register with the aperture 7. The anchoring member 9 is then .passed through the transversely extending aperture 7 and the opening 8 whereby any torsional strain of the post upon the base will be greatly re duced since the anchoring member 9 extends through the entire width of the plastic base.
13y referring to Fig. 4 it will be seen that the opening 8 is formed in the rib member 2 adjacent the back 1. As the anchoring member 9 is passed through the aperture 7 and the opening 8 it will rest againstone side of the back member 1 so that when any torsional strain is brought to bear upon the post it will be taken up by the anchoring member 9.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that. the rib member of the post may be provided with a number of openings whereby the pin may be placed in any one of the same when so desired.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
A fence post comprising a plastic base, said base provided with a receiving socket, said base also provided with a transversely extending aperture communicating with said socket, in combination with a T-shaped post, the web and back of said post being integrallv formed, said web provided with an opening in its lower portion and adjacent the back, said post adapted to fit in said socket of said base, said opening registering with said aperture, said aperture and opening adapted to receive a pin after the device has been assembled for reducing the twisting strain upon the web, said pin resting snugly against the front face of said back.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
