Description

W. G. COPELAND.
FENCE POST. APPLICATION FILED 11110.6, 1911.
1,092,432. Patented Apr. 7, 1914. v
WITNESSES WALTER G. COPELAND, OF WACO, TEXAS.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 6, 1911.
Patented Apr. Z, 1914.
Serial No. 664,275.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WALTER G. COPELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a class of fence posts and more particularly to that class of fence posts which are provided with means whereby a wire may be securely held thereto. 7
Another object of my invention is to provide a fence post of simple construction and provided with means for holding wire thereto, the wire holding means also being of simple construction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved fence post. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line X X Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the key or securing means. Fig. 5 is a detail View of a section of the post.
In the accompanying drawings which fully illustrate the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates the post preferably constructed of metal and formed as is clearly shown. As is the ordinary post, the post herein disclosed is adapted to be sunk into the ground as shown in Fig. 1 whereby it may be held stationary. I also reserve the right to provide any other means for supporting my post. I provide the post 1 with the slot 2 which slot has its sides formed as shown at 3 and clearly illustrated in Fig. 5.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the post itself can be easily constructed and sold at a very low cost.
My post is adapted to be used in connection with the ordinary wire fence, the wire passing through the slot 3 and engaging the sides as is shown in Fig. 2.
I further provide a key 5 which has the extension l formed thereon, the said extension being peculiarly formed as will be realized upon reference to the drawings. The particular construction of the extension 4 is clearly obvious upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it may be called substan tially triangular shaped in cross section whereby, when it is inserted into the slot 2, two of its three sides will engage the portions 3, the other of its sides will tend to jam the wires 6 as is obvious. After the body portion 5 is in place as is clearly shown one end 7 of the same may be bent inwardly as shown in Fig. 3 whereby the key is securely held in place and all movement of the same is prevented.
I desire to lay great stress upon the simplicity of my device and it is thought that the advantages and novel features of the same will be appreciated from the foregoing disclosure.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a fence post provided with slots for engagement with wires, and a key way formed in each of said slots, of a U-shaped key, one of the arms of which is engaged in said way, and adapted to hold said wire in engagement with said post, the opposite arm extending beyond the face of said post.
2. In a device as set forth, a substantially U-shaped key having one prong thereof triangular in shape and the other prong fiat, said triangular prong adapted to be inserted into an opening of a metal fence post whereby the wires of a fence may be frictionally held in place.
3. In a device as set forth, a substantially U -shaped key having one prong thereof triangular in shape and the other prong flat, said triangular prong adapted to be inserted into an opening of a metal fence post whereby the wires of the fence may be frictionally held in a desired position and the extreme outer end of said flat prong adapted to be bent so. as to frictionally engage a post whereby the substantially U- shaped key will be held firmly in place.
4. In a wire fence, the combination of,
metallic posts, said posts provided With slots therein, substantially U-shaped keys, one prong of said keys being triangular in shape and adapted to be inserted in said slots, the other prong of said keys being flat and adapted to engage the edge of said post and to have the extreme outer end thereof bent substantially at right angles so as to firmly engage the post, thereby firmly holding said key in place.
5. In a Wire fence, the combination of, metallic posts, said posts provided With slots therein, substantially U-shaped keys, one prong of said keys being triangular in shape and adapted to be inserted in said slots, the other prong of said keys being fiat and adapted to engage the edge of said posts and to have the extreme outer end thereof bent substantially at right angles so as to firmly engage the posts, thereby firmly holding said key in place, and said slots provided with cut-out portions for the reception of tWo corners of the triangularly shaped prong of said keys.
