wi wmeo COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH c GEORGE R. DIBERT, OF FORD, IDAHO.
NAIL-EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 27, 1913.
Patented NOV. 25, 1913. Serial No. 744,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. DIBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ford, in the county of Kootenai and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nail-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a tool particularly adapted for use in facilitating the extraction of nails or spikes and comprises, broadly, a handle bar having a member connected thereto and adapted for engagement with a nail, said member being adjustable whereby the tool may be used for extracting nails of difierent sizes.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4c is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises a handle bar 5 having one end thereof bifurcated as indicated at 6 to provide claws which constitute the usual form of nail extractor. The other end 7 of the handle bar is squared and has its extremity beveled as indicated at 8 and provided with a plurality of transverse corrugations 9 for a purpose which will presently appear.
An adjustable member generally indicated by (1 comprises a plate 10 the longitudinal edges of which are bent at right angles to the body portion to provide the guides 11 which have their free edges bent inwardly in order to engage the longitudinally extending guide grooves 12 which are formed upon the opposite sides of the ends 7 of the handle bar. The under surface of the plate 10 is provided with corrugations 13 which engage similar corrugations formed upon the adjacent surface of the end 7 whereby the said plate is effectually prevented from slipping after the same is fas tened in a manner to be presently described.
Extending through the enlarged end 7 is a small bolt 14 which projects through an elongated slot 15 formed in the plate 10, said bolt having the wing nut 16 threaded thereon, the latter beingused for the purpose of fastening the plate to the bar after it has been adjusted longitudinally to the position desired.
The forward end of the plate 10 is provided with spaced upstanding ears 17 which are adapted to receive therebetween the ear 18 of a nail engaging element 19, the latter being pivoted to the plate 10 by means of a pintle 20 which engages said ears.
The nail engaging element 19 is provided with a central opening 21 which is large enough to receive the head of any sized nail. By first raising the head of a nail slightly by means of the end 6 of the handle bar 5 and then passing the head through the opening 21 in the element 19, it will be seen that the beveled surface 8 of the end 7 will act as a fulcrum for rocking the handle bar, and the corrugations or serrations 9 will engage the nail and as the latter will bind against the edges of the opening 21, it will be seen that successive operations of the handle bar will extract the said nail.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a device which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum, and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is A tool of the class described comprising a handle formed at one end to provide a fulcrum, said handle being formed with longitudinall'y extending slots on opposite sides adjacent the fulcrum end, a plate resting upon the upper surface of the handle and In testimony whereof I afiix my signature having portions fitting in the slots in the in presence of two Witnesses.
