Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1913.
Application med mat 12, 1912'. Serial No. 693309.
To all whom it may cono'ern: i r
Be it known that I, JACKSON W. BRU'roN, citizen of the United States, residing at Guthrie, in the county of Callaway and State of Milssou -i have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Attachments of which the following is' a specification. H i l y This invention relatesto attachments for the pockets of garments to hold pencils, fountain pensandlike implements, and prevent-them from falling from the pocket, and has for one of itsobje'cts to provide a simply constructed device which may be re ad'ily attached to and removed from the garment, and which does not in ure the garment or require any permanent fastening devices.
Another objectof th'e inventi'on is to pro was a device of this character which may be readily applied and in which provision is i made for guiding the attaching devices. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is-a view of agarment from the outside, with' the outer member of the improved devicein position thereon; Fig. 2 is a view of portion of a garment from the inside, with. the ,inner member of .the improved device in position thereon; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the fastener portion of the improved j d'evi'ce; Fig. 1 is a cross section on the'line 1- 1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inner clamp mmbem-Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the outer clamp member. tive view of the improved device illustrating a modification in the construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improveddevice comprises in general two plates preferably of metal, one to be located externally of the garment and the other to be located internally of the garment oppositethe outer plate and with yieldable fastening devices employed to connect the two plates in position. The outer plate is represented as a whole at 10 and with the upper edge turned over as shown at 11, to form a wire-holding socket and with perforations 12 near the ends. The plate 10 is also formed with tongues" 21 to fold over the resilient members and assist in holding the same, as hereafter explained. The inner plate is represented as a whole at 13, and is provided with apertures 14 near the ends and with notches 15 in the lower edge spaced apart the same distance as the apertureslQ- and 14. The plate 13 is also provided with a lip 16 to receive the terminals ofv the holding pins, as hereafter explained. The yieldable fastening device is formed preferably from a single piece of wire and comprises a longitudinal body portion 17 bentrinto coils 18 at the terminal of the body portion and with the remainingportions of the wire extendedthrough the coils as shown at 19, and thence extended later: Ially as shown at 20, the terminals of the 1 portions 20 beingpointedrto' enable them to be forced through the garment. The plates 10-13 will be of sulficient length to extend partly across a pocket near the opening as represented in Fig. 1, in which a portion of a garment isfrepre'sented at 24 with the 1 pocket flap at 22.
The wire portion of the device is first 1 attached to the plate 10 by inserting the lateral portions 20 through the apertures 12 and forcingthebody portions 17 beneath guides to determine the points where the pins are to be thrust through the garment.
The plate 13 is then removed and the plate 10 disposed upon the flap 22. The plate 13 is then located on the inner face of the garment with the protruding portions of the pins extending through the apertures 14. The pins 20 are then turned up and engaged with the lip 16 which thus locks the two plates and the fastening device to the garment. It will be understood that the portions 19 of the fastening device will be sufficiently short so that when the device is attached the springs will be compressed and thus apply the necessary tension to hold the device in position and prevent accidental displacement while at the same time the springs will yieldably support the plates to permit pencils, fountain pens, or other artii may be of any suitable metal and plated,
galvanized, or otherwise treated or protected. The plates may be colored to correspond to the garment to which they are attached so that their appearance will not be ing an outer plate having a longitudinally observable.
In Fig. 7 is shown a modification of the construction consisting in forming the member 17 in two portions as represented at 2323 engaging in opposite ends of the rolled over portion 11, but this would not constitute a departure from the principle of the invention or sacrifice any of its advantages. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An attachment for garments comprisextending holding socket and adapted to bear externally of a garment, an inner plate adapted to bear against the inner side of a garment, a fastening device including a U- shaped wire body at its intermediate por tion engaging said socket and with the end portions extending through the plates, and means for detachably securing the end portions of the inner plate.
2. An attachment for garmentscomprising coacting plates adapted to bear against the outer and inner sides or" a garment, fastening devices extending through said plates, means for yieldably engaging said fastening devices with one of said plates, and means for detachably connecting the fastening devices to the other plate.
3. An attachment for garments comprising coacting plates adapted to bear against the outer and inner sides of a garment, guide members extending from one of said plates and through the other plate and guiding the same, and a spring connected to each of said guide members and bearing against the adjacent plate.
4:. An attachment for garments comprising coacting plates adapted to bear against the outer and inner sides of a garment, fastening devices each including a coil spring bearing upon one of the plates and with one terminal of the coil extending through the plates, and means for detachably connecting said extending terminals to the other of said plates.
5. An attachment for garments comprising coacting plates adapted to bear against the outer and inner sides of a garment, guide members extending from one of the plates and slidable through the other plate, a coil spring connected by its outer helix to each of said guide members and bearing by its inner helix against the adjacent plates.
6. An attachment for garments comprising co -acting plates adapted to bear respectively upon the outer and inner sides of a garment, resilient members connected to one of said plates, fastening devices extending from said resilient members and projecting through the other plate, and means for detachably engaging said fastening devices with said last-mentioned plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
