Description

W. W. WALSH.
CURTAIN ROD HLJIER.`
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 2o, 1911.
@y4825 o Patented Oct. 7, 1913.
INVENTOR WITNESSES: I
WALTER W. WALSH, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURTAIN-ROD HOLDER.
App1icaton led March 20, 1911.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known thatl I, VV'ALTER W. VVALsH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Alleglieny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Rod Holders, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to curtain rod holders, and it has for its object to provide a device of this character that shall be readily adapted for use with rods of different diameters and lengths and be susceptible of such adjustment as to support the rod at any desired distance from the casing of a window, within wide limits.
A further object of my invention is to provide a holder of such construction as to permit a curtain to hang directly from and at both sides of it without interference with or injury to the fabric.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, mainly in side elevation but partially in section, of the holder shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line III III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modication. Fig.
5 is an end elevation of the rod-gripping devices shown in Fig. 4.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1 is a supporting member, the form and dimensions of which are not material to my invention but, as here shown, is formed of strap metal and comprises a horizontal part 2 having a longitudinal slot or groove 3, an inclined brace arm 4 and two vertical end portions 5 and 6 to be fastened by nails or screws to a window casing. rIwo curved, downwardly projecting arms 7 and 8, for receiving and gripping a curtain rod (not shown), are respectively provided with lateral projections 9 and 10 having longitudinal slots 11 and 12 that are vertically above the slot or groove 3. In order to guide the parts 9 and 10 and clamp them to the part 2, I provide the latter with a screw stud 13 that projects through the slots 11 and 12 and is engaged by a clamping nut 14. It will generally be found desirable to provide another means for guiding the parts 9 and 10. As here shown, such guide is an integral tongue 15 on the part 9 that projects through the slot 12 and into the slot or groove 3. Guides of dif- Specication of Letters Patent.
Patent-ed Get. 1913.
Serial No. 615,498.
ferent form and location may, of course, be employed, if desired. I have also shown the horizontal portion of the part 4 as provided with integral lips 16 that are bent into proximity to the edges of the parts 2, 9 and 10 and inwardly above the part 9, in order to serve as guides and to impart greater rigidity to the structure, but these parts are by no means essential.
It will be understood from the illustra tion and the forego-ing description that the rod-embracing arms may be adjusted horizontally over a considerable range and be securely clamped in any position to which they may be adjusted, and that they may be relatively adjusted to accommodate them to rods of different diameters. So far as the first named adjustment is concerned, the parts 9 and 10 may be regarded as a single member and, in fact, may be a single member. l
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, the parts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 13 and 14 are, in all essential respects, like the corresponding parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this form of my invention, the lateral projection 17 of the arm 8 is provided with a guide tongue 18 to engage the slot or groove 3 and with integral brackets or ears 19, between which are located two pins 20 and 21. The pin 20 constitutes a hinge pin for the arm 7 and the pin 21 constitutes a support for a spring 22 that serves to hold the arm 7 in its normal rod-grasping position but permits it to turn upon its hinge pin for the purpose of admitting a rod between it and the arm 8 or providing space for a rod of larger diameter. I have here shown the parallel parts of the members 2 and 4 as fastened together by a rivet 23 for increasing the rigidity of the struct-ure, and it will be understood that the corresponding parts shown in Fig. 2may be fastened together in this manner if desired.
It will be noted that a pair of holders constructed in accordance with my invention may be used in conjunction with a rod of any desired diameter and length (within wide limits) to suspend curtains the combined widths of which are equal to or greater or less than the space between the holders. If the combined widths of the curtains are greater than the space between the holders, the arms 7 and 8 will receive and support the rod and the portions of the curtains which surround it and the spaces between their lower ends will permit the curtains to hang freely from the rod.
I desire it to he `understood that variations in form, dimensions or materialsl that do not materially change the mode of opera-4 tion or result are within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a pair of cur-ved, -downwardly-projecting, rod-.embracing arms havingslotted vlateral projections7 vone .of saidy projections having a guidepiece. to -coplerate with thev slot. inythe other, ;of a supporting .1nemher.p,rovided. with integral ,guide clipsand a slot to-receive said guidev piece and Vwith a singlemeans vfor clamping .said lateral .projections gin-any .position to which either.or both of theminayheadusted.
