Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST N. HUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garters and the objects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efliciency in use.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my garter. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line as w of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line y y of Flg. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my hook plate. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of my eye plate. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line w w of Fig. 1, in part broken out, showing a shorter adjustment of the clasp supporting webbing than shown in Fig. 2.
A is the hook plate for my garter which is an essentially rectangular or nearly square plate of sheet metal having a leg webbing receiving slot 10 parallel and close to one of the vertical edges and .a hook 11 at the opposite edge, a clasp supporting webbing receiving slot 12 parallel and close to the bottom edge and corresponding with the same parallel and near the upper edge a clasp sup-porting webbing opening 13 formed by a three sided shear cut or slit, comprising two short vertical slits at the sides 14 connected at the lower ends by a long horizontal slit forming a clamping member comprising a clamping lip 16 hanging from the top side of the plate and a clamping edge 15 formed in the body of the plate by said horizontal slit and bending backward the said clamping lip. Material that is unessential to my plate is cut out of the center, leaving an essentially square opening 17 at the center, and at the same time providing friction edges that are effective in coacting in retaining the end of the webbing fixedly attached to the hook late when brought in contact therewith as ereinafter described.
B is the eye member of my garter and is an essentially rectangular plate provided with a projecting eye 18 at one edge adapted to engage with the said hook of the hook plate, and provided with three vertical leg webbing receiving slots, the inner one or front slot 19 adjacent the said eye of a breadth and length corresponding to the width and a single thickness of webbing, the outer one or back slot 20 remote from the said eye of a breadth corresponding to the width of the webbing and a length corresponding to a double thickness of webbing, and the intermediate slot 21 of a breadth slightly less than the width of the webbing and a length to accommodate a single thickness of Webbing located close to the said back slot and appreciably remote from the said front slot.
C is the end plate to my garter and is adapted to be rigidly secured to the end of the webbing E in any ordinary manner, as by threading the webbing back and forth through a couple of slots 22 and 23 separated by a bar 24 and having an enlargement, as a metal tip 25 on the end of the webbing of such dimensions that it will not pass through the said slots. After forming a loop 26 engaging the leg webbing slot 10 of the hook plate, the webbing is again rove through the same two slots, forming a rigid frictional attachment with the said end plate when under tension but permitting adjustment of the length of the said loop member when relaxed.
D is the hose clasp to my garter, and may be of ordinary construction and provided with a horizontal slot 27 at the upper end suitable for a means of support by a loop 28 in the clasp supporting webbing.
E and F are the leg webbing and clasp supporting webbing respectively.
In assembling my garter, the leg webbing E is threaded through the front slot 22 of the end plate from the back forward until the said metal tip 25 at the end is brought into abutment with the back face of the said end plate C, passed along the front of the same across the bar 24 and backward through the back slot 23 and then doubled on itself and passed along the back side to the back of the said leg webbing receiving slot in the hook plate, passed through said slot from back forward, and doubled back on itself, forming the hook plate loop 26, then passed again through the two slots in the end plate, first through the front slot from the back forward, across the front and backward through the back slot, inclosing a part of the end of the webbing between itself and the said bar, and is then passed around to the eye plate. arrangement of the webbing and end plate affords a means of adjustment of the hook plate loop and in a well known manner.
The end of the leg webbing remote from the said end plate is fixedly attached to the said eye plate B as follows: The said webbing is first passed through the outer back slot in said eye plate from the back toward the front, passed along the front and backward through the said front slot 19, then again from the back through the back slot toward the front, and then by a relatively sharp bend passed back through the said intermediate slot 21', the extreme short end laid along the back extending toward the said front slot, the extreme edge adjacent to the said front slot, providing an appreciable lap 011 the back, a feature that is favored by having the said intermediate slot remote from the said front slot. This completes the threading of the webbing E, the body of which may then be pulled back, the end being securely fastened to the eye plate by the friction of the lapping of the body on the said short end, the cramping and binding effect of the said relatively narrow intermediate slot, and the binding effect of the edges of the severalslots on the folds and loops of the body of the webbing.
The clasp supporting webbing F supports the hose clasp D by the downwardly extending loop 28 formed by doubling back the said webbing from the slot in the said hose clasp, one of the ends of the said clasp supporting'webbing being rigidly secured to the said" hook plate A and the other end adjustably secured to the same as will be hereinafter described.
The end of one of the members of the loop of the clasp supporting Webbing, preferably the back member 29 and also the adjustable member, is provided at the extreme edge with a metal tip 36', which may serve conveniently as a handle during adjustment. The said clasp supporting webbing is rove successively first through the said horizontal slot 12 in said hook plate A the end having the said metal tip 36 hanging downward on the front side, then through the supporting slot 27 in the hose clasp from the back toward the front, then a second time through the said horizontal slot 12 in the hook plate A and in the same direction, from the front toward the back, and passing upward along the back of the saidhook plate A over the top edge toward the front downward and backward and finally through the said horizontal opening 13 near the top edge, between the said clamping lip 16 and clamping edge 15 and then downward along the back of As has been described, the

The front member 31 of the clasp supporting loop 28 accordingly has its end squeezed between the part passing along .the back from the said bottom horizontal slot 12 to the top edge of the plate and is pressed against the edges of the square hole 17 in the center ofthe plate A, resulting in essentially a holding friction in combination with the friction of the folds and bends described, so that a good rigid hold on the said webbing suitable for normal conditions, is produced without utilizing the clamping effect of the clamping members and in which case a plain horizontal slot may be utilized to replace the said opening and clamping members 15 and 16' precisely similar to the said lower horizontal slot 12. I prefer to provide the said clamping members 15 and 16, which are utilized to clamp the webbing by pressing the said lip 16 against the Webbing F, clamping the same against the clamping edge 15 of the plate. As described, the said front member 31 of the clasp supporting loop 28 is fixedly attached to the hook plate. The back member of the said cl'asp supporting loop 28 as described, loops over the bottom bar of the hook plate between the lower horizontal slot 12 and the bottom edge of the plate, the end and its metal tip 36 squeezed between the two members of the clasp supporting loop, producing friction which co-acts with the friction of the loops engaged in the slots in the hook plate A and the hose clasp D in producing a holding friction. By operating the end of the clasp supporting webbing F by means of the metal tip 36 the length of the said clasp supporting loop 28 may be varied to obtain the adjustment desired.
In the garter described, accordingly, means for adjustment of the length of loop of the leg webbing are provided in the end plate, and means for vertical adjustment along the length of the leg are provided in the adjustment of the clasp supporting webbing described;
I claim as my invention In a garter, a hook plate comprising an essentially square plate having a vertical leg webbing receiving slot at one end, a hook at the other end, an essentially square opening in the center, a horizontal clasp supporting webbing receiving slot along the bottom edge and clamping members near the top edge suitable for clamping the end of the clasp supporting webbing.
