Description

J. B. RUSS.
BUTTON TAB BND. APPLICATION FILED MAY 20, 191s.
Patented Deo. 9, 1913.
IINIPIED STATES PATENT @FEIQI JOHN B. RUSS, OF SHELTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T0 ROBERT N. BASSETT COMPANY, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BUTTON-TAB END.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN B. Russ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Tab Ends, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to an improved button tab end for hose supporters of the well known but-ton and loop type.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new method of connecting the button supporting strip to the button itself so as to avoid sewing and clamp fastenings, and a very important feature of the invention is to so thread the said strip through the slotted base plate of the button as to secure the much-to-be-desired rustless effect.
Heretofore it has b-een customary to stiften the lower end of a hose supporter strip as shown in Crandall Patent No. 841,9e0, dated January 22, 1907, so as to assist in holding a threaded tape securely to the slotted plate of a similar button. The method of threading, however, in the present instance, is such that this eXtra expense is entirely avoided, the binding action of the tape against the plate by reason of the unique threaded arrangement being suihcient to guarantee a firm and effect-ive holding.
In the drawings Figure l is a relatively enlarged side elevation of a button with its plate and supporting strip shown in section, said parts being assembled in final form ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the several folds of the strip being somewhat open to illustrate more clearly the course of the threading.
l represents a button.
2 represents a button-supporting plate having three transverse slots therein, said slots being substantially parallel. One of the slots 3 is located on one side of the shank of the button, namely, the lower side, while the two other slots 4 5 are on the other side of the shank of the button. All these slots are substantially parallel, and the same are of a length suflicient to receive the desired width of webbing. The width of the slots is preferably as follows-the slot 5 is wide enough to receive two thicknesses of the webbing, while the slots 3 and 4:, and particularly the slot 4:, are somewhat narrower, the slot t in its most effective form being Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 20, 1913.

only wide enough to snugly receive the webbing strip indicated at 6. The slots %5 are on what would be the upper end of the plate when the device is suspended ready for use.
The course of the threading of the end of the tape 6 through the slots is as follows: The tape is passed through the slot 5 from the rear to the front. It is then passed through the slot 4 from the front to the rear. It is then carried down the back of the plate and up through the slot 3 from the rear to the front. It is then wrapped around the lower edge of the plate from the front to the rear and turned back. The eX- treme end of the tape passes through the slot 5 from the rear to the front, thence is tucked toward the button under the overlying binding loop indicated at 6a whereby the eXtreme end of the tape is securely held. The several leads of the tape in the plate are pulled taut, as shown in Fig. l, so that the binding loop 6a will firmly hold the eXtreme hidden lower end of the tape.
6b represents the lower loop of tape which covers and protects all that part of the frame or plate 2 from engagement with the body. rlhe upper part of the frame above the loop 5 is protected from contact with the wearer by that part of the tape from which the button and frame are suspended. The loop 6b likewise has a clamping effect on that part of the webbing strip leading along the bac-k of the plate from the slot 4 to the slot 3. By reason of the tortuous course of the webbing, and by reason of the binding action of the overlying loops, the webbing is held securely against slipping and accidental disengagement from the slotted button plate 2.
TNhat I claim is:
In a button tab end for button-and-loop hose supporters, a button, a base plate therefor having three transverse slots, one of said slots being near the lower edge of the base plate, two of said slots being near the upper edge of the base plate, combined with a strip of webbing threaded through said slots as follows-through the uppermost slot from the rear to the front, thence down to and through the next adjacent slot from the front to the rear, thence down to and through the lowermost slot from the rear to the front, thence down to and around the lower edge of the plate and up along the back thereof to and again through the upadequately support said extreme end of the permost slot from the rear to the front, webbing. thence downwardly again toward the butt0n, the eXtreme end terminating on the JOHN B RUSS' 5 outer face of the plate between the two up- Witnesses:
permost slots, the bar between the two up- M. A. LEONARD,
permost slots being of suioient width to J. E. C. FOGARTY.
Copies of th'is patent may he obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
