IMPROVED HARNESS-PAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 107,361, dated September 13, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Gnnvns, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of harness-pads wherein a double-flanged metallic pad-plate is employed; and the nature of my improvement consists in the manner of securing the skirting to the pad-plate, whereby the same is made more rigid, and the strength and durability greatly increased over the usual method of fastenings.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, with a portion of the cushion removed, showing the manner of securing the skirting to the pad-plate; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the padplate with cushion removed.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the several figures, denote like parts.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawmg.
As the cushion employed, together with the manner of securing the same to the flanged plate A, forms no part of the present invention, a description thereof is not necessary to be herein fully given.
A represents the pad-plate or harness-tree, constructed of metal, shaped approximating to the desired shape of cushion, and provided on each edge with a flange projecting above and below the plate, forming longitudinal grooves or channels, which receive the cushion B and skirting O. Said skirting is secured to the pad-plate at the center by the usual hook,
terrets, and pad-screws, and at the ends of the pad-plate by screw-bolt D and nut d, said bolt passing through openings 0 in the end of the pad-plate into nut d, which is secured between the upper and lower layer of material forming the skirting, thus firmly securin g the same.
It is found, in practical use, where the skirting is connected to the pad-plate at a distance from the end of the pad-plate by pad-screw only, it does not retain its proper position. Thus its durability is much less than with my manner of connection. The skirting being connected to the end of the pad-plate independent of the cushion, it, is retained firmly within the grooves or channel, and prevented from coming in contact with the upper edge of the flanges, whereby greater durability is retained.
Having thus described the nature and ob ject of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bolt D, whereby the skirting O is firmly secured to the end of the pad-plate A,'substantially as and for the purpose specified.
