INVENTOR W ATTORNEY COLUMBIA lLANOURI-n C c.
WITNESSES UTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERT W. PARKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARTER.
Application filed May 9, 1912.
To (LU QU/ZOID/ it may concern Be it known that I, Bnn'r W. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in. the city, ci'iunty, and State of New York have ii'wented a new and useful Improvement in Garters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a :t'ull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention has reference to an improvement in garters particularly intended for supporting mens socks and of the class in which a clasp to catch the upper edge of the sock is suspended trom an adjustable band which encircles the calf oi the leg.
In one well-known example of a ga-rter o't this kind, the clasp is suspended from a cord loop, one side of which plays loosely through the looped end oi an elastic tape, and the other through a flat hook on the other end (it the elastic tape, the loop oi the elastic tape being shortened or lengthened by means ot an adjustable buckle to adjustthe garter to the size and length of the Wearers leg. In this type of garter, the rubber of the elastic tape, embracing the warm upper part of the leg, soon stretches and deteriorates so as to be useless. and further unpleasantly binds the leg, while the cord is also Iincomfortable and soon wears out particularly because of its constant playing through the hook and loop of the elastic tape. In another type of this class of garter, the clasp is suspended. from a roughly triangular pad, which is permanently fastened to one end of the adjustable elastic tape and by a detachable fastening to the adjustable loop on the other end of the elastic tape. This pad is clumsy, unsightly, hot and unsanitary.
In my improved garter, I make the adjustable band which embraces the calf, pre'l:'- erably of inelastic tape which is continued downward on one side of the sock clasp and carried upward therefrom on the other side of a V to a detachable fastening to which the other end of the inelastic tape is secured. From this deta ch able fastening a short strap of elastic tape is carried transversely across the lower part oi the leg to a permanent union with the other side of the suspension V formed by the inelastic tape, thus forming an open suspension triangle, which will readily adapt itself to any size and length of leg, thereby :t'orn'iing a garter which will be free from the objections hereinbe'tore mentioned in other forms of garters and Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 696,079.
will have other advantages hereafter set forth.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, 1 shall first describe in detail the mode in which I carry my invention into practice and then distinctly claim the invention.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which like parts are designated by the same letters in both figures.
Figure T represents a garter embodying my invention, detached. l ig. ll represents the same in use.
In the manu'lacture of this cmbmlimcnt of my invention, I make the leg hand of inelastic tape, 10. and by preference of flat tubular 'labric tor strength and durability. in the case ol the single clasp garter shown, "I prefer to continue the clasp end of the inelastic tape Ylt), downward on one side of a V-shaped pendant to the sock clasp 11, which may be of any suitable Eorm as that shown, and then after attaching the vertex of the V-pendant to the clasp 11, continue the inelastic tape upward on the other side of the V, to the point Of attaclnnent to the free end 12 oi the inelastic tape 10.
For attaching the free end 12 ot the elastic tape to the pendant, any suitable form of coupling may be used. For example, have here shown an ordinary metal loop 13, carried loosely on the looped tree end 12 oil. the tape 10, which latter is adjustable to [it the leg by means of an ordinary adjustable buckle ll. The metal loop 13 adapted to engage detachably, a headed post 15 on the V-pendant.
'logive all needed elasticity to the inelastic tape '10 where it en'ibraces the leg, I extend a rubber web or other suitable elastic strap 16 across the top of the V-pendant, attaching the respective ends of the strap to the inelastic tape on opposite sides of the V- pendant. This elastic strap 16 gives to permit the inelastic leg band to adapt and adjust itself to the length, size and shape of the leg, the opposite tape sides of the open clasp pendant se 'iarating and approaching to permit the necessary extension and contraction of the elastic strap 10. At the same time the flat strap and flat tape sides of the clasp pendant lie comfortably on the leg without interfering with the necessary coolness and ventilation thereof. The inelastic tape 10 not only slides more freely the heat and perspiration of the leg.
through the adjusting buckle 14 than the usual elastic band, but will not rapidly deteriorate as rubber tape does in the same location on the upper and under warm part of the leg. The inelastic tape 10 also does not uncomfortably bind and disfigure the leg as does the usual rubber tape and is much stronger and durable than rubber tape. At the same time the elastic cross-strap 16, gives all needed elasticity to the garter, and being only on the lower, forward and cool part of the leg, does not deteriorate from Further, there being only a short piece of elastic tape required for the cross-strap, it can be made of the very best rubber fabric without as much expense as is ordinarily required to make the leg band of inferior elastic fabric.
In fastening the ends of the elastic strap 16 to the elastic tape when the latter is made of fiat tubular fabric, I usually prefer to slit the side of the tubular tape 10 and insert and stitch the ends of the strap 16 therein as indicated. At the same time, I may fasten the coupling post 15 to the union of the strap 16 and tape 10, by inserting arms 17 on the bottom of the post 15 between the strap fabric and upper tape fabric, and stitching the post arms therebetween as indicated.
It is evident that two sock clasps instead of one as shown may in some cases be used with this form of garter by separating the tape 10 at the vertex of the V-pendant and attaching a clasp to each of the separated pendant ends of the tape.
Having thus described my invention and the mode in which I carry the same into practice, what I claim is:
1-. A garter formed of separated depending tapes converging at the bottom to form a V with a sock clasp at the vertex, an elastic cross-strap having its ends attached to the respective upper ends of the converging depending tapes, an adjustable inelastic leg band extending from one end of the elastic cross-strap and having its other end provided with a coupling for attaching it to the other end of the elastic cross strap, sub stantially as described.
2. A garter consisting of a sock clasp, a
leg band formed of inelastic tape extending downward on one side to the sock clasp and upward therefrom to form a V-like pendant, an elastic cross-strap having its ends attached to the members of the pendant at a substantial distance above the clasp, and a coupling for attaching the free end of the inelastic leg band to the union of the elastic cross-strap and the free upper end of the V-like clasp pendant, substantially as de-' scribed. v
3. A garter consisting of a sock-clasp, a leg band formed of inelastic tubular tape extending downward on one side to the sock clasp and upward therefrom to form a V- like clasp pendant, an elastic cross-strap connecting the upper ends of the V-like clasp pendant and having its ends inserted through slits and stitched inside the inelastic tubular tape, and a coupling for attaching the free end of the inelastic leg band to'the union of the elastic cross-strap and the free upper end of the V-like clasp pendant, substantially as described.
I. A garter formed of separated depending tapes converging at the bottom to form a V with a sock clasp at the vertex, an elastic cross-strap having its ends attached to the respective upper ends of the converging depending tapes, an adjustable leg band extending from one end of the elastic crossstrap and having its other end provided with a coupling for attaching it to the other end of the elastic cross strap, substantially as described.
5. A garter formed of separated inelastic depending tapes converging at the bottom to form a V with a sock clasp at the vertex, an elastic cross stra-p having its ends attached to the respective upper ends of the converging depending tapes, an adjustable 7 leg band extending from one end of the clastic cross-strap and having its other end provided with a coupling for attaching it to the other end of the elastic cross-strap, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I have. hereunto set my hand the 29th day of April 1912.
