, Specification of Letterslatent.
. PatentedJuly 1, 1913.
Application filed Auguste, 1912; Serial No. 713,560.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN V. DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corner-Piece, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in corner pieces or plates, and has for an object to provide an improved construction which will bind the various blocks forming the corner properly together and also provide openings through which bonding mortar may project.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved corner piece adapted to be stamped from a single piece ofmaterial with a minimum loss, and when so stamped form a perforated body for lying fiatwise on the corner,.and a plurality of braces extending at right angles to the body and in diflerent planes for engaging the inner and outer sides of each of the walls.
In carrying out these objects, a corner piece is provided by stamping out tongues or cars and then bending certain parts of the blank along the base of the tongue whereby the tongues project above the base of the blank and the bent over or turned down portions will project below in order to tie the upper and low-er blocks together and to form a brace engaging a plurality of blocks. By stamping the tongues out of the base of the blank comparatively large openings are provided through which the mortar may pass when the base is in use so as to bind the upper layer of blocks to the lower layer.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in. all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank shown in Fig. 1 bent ready for use; Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the corner of a wall with a corner piece embodying the invention applied thereto; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the construction shown in Fig. 3 showing how the tongues and bent down portions overlap a plurality of adjacent blocks.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the blank as a whole, formed with a body 2 and stamped out or pressed up tongues 3, 4, 5, and 6.
The body 2 is bent on lines 7, 8, 9, and 10 in one direction whereby the tongues 3, 4, 5, and 6 extend in an opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 2. This will produce openings 11, 12, 13, and 14 through which mortar or other binding material may freely pass for binding one layer of blocks to the other. A central aperture 15 is also stamped out for providing an additional opening for the binding agent. The material from the opening 15 is not utilized and is therefore wasted, while the remaining part of the entire blank 1 is utilized for acting either as a base or bracing member. In order that the downward extensions of the members 3 and 4 may beproperly bent the same are severed online 16.
After the corner piece has been made and stamped out and bent up as shown in Fig. 2 the same is placed in the wall as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the members 6, 7, 8, and 9 will be arranged on opposite sides of the walls 17 and 18 for binding the abutting portions of the wall properly together. By the particular arrangement of the turned up portions 6, 7 8, and 9 and their depending members, the blocks of wall 17 will press against members 6 and 3 and against approximately half of the member or ear 5. The blocks of wall 18 act in the same manner in respect to the ears 4:, 5, and 6, whereby each of the ears 6 and 9 and their depending members engage a plurality of blocks for thoroughly bracing and tying the same together.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent:
In a corner piece of the class described, a single blank formed substantially in the shape of a Maltese cross having the center of the arms thereof pressed upward in one direction and the material opposite said pressed up portion bent downwardly in the opposite direction whereby upstanding and depending stops are provided, and a substantially L-shaped apertured framework is In testimony whereof I have signed my presented, the upstanding depending porname to this specification in the presence of 10 tion being adapted to fit upon different faces two subscribing witnesses.
of the corner of the Wall when the device is in position for acting as a tying member, STEPHEN VINCENT DUFFY the skeleton structure of the body portion WVitnesses: permitting a binding agent to extend there- A. S. INGRAM, through. i I RICHARD W. F AUGI-INAR.
