SHEET-METAL TOY.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed January 9, 1917. Serial No. 141,364.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL KESSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, 1n the county of Kings and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet metal toys such for instance as toy railroad cars and the like in which there are side walls to be joined to a bottom wall; and one of the objects of the invention is to Provide an improved form of joint for this purpose.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less broad than those stated above, together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will appear from the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as part of this specification, and in which I have shown a merely preferred form of embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy railroad car including my invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are views, partly in section, illustrating the form of joint; and Fig. 4: is an edge view of the floor member shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, the toy includes a floor member 5 and a slide wall 6. The floor member is pro vided with a hook 7 at its longitudinal edges, formed by bending the metal sharply upon itself, and this hook receives a flange 8 at the lower edge of the side wall, said flange being formed by bending the metal at right angles to the general plane of the side wall, this flange 8 being joined to the side wall by means of a curved part 9 and the parts being disposed so that the side wall is preferably offset from the outer edge of the flange 8. This flange 8 in practice is engaged within the hook or fold 7 of the floor member, and then in order that the floor member and the wall may be held completely against relative lateral movement the floor member 5 is punched up Wherever desired, the metal thus displaced indicated at 10 engaging the convex side of the fold or bend 9.
Inasmuch as many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, two joined members, one having its edge bent to form a hook. the other member having its edge bent at right angles to form a flange, engaging in said hook or fold of the first member, and the first member being provided with a punched up tongue the free end of which engages the inner surface of the second meinber at or adjacent to the bent portion thereof.
2. In a device of the kind described, a floor member and a side member having in terlocking portions preventinglateral movement in one direction, one of said members.
having a pinched up tongue the free end of which engages the other member to prevent lateral movement in the oDnosite direction.
3. In a device of the kind described, a floor member and a side member having interlocking portions preventing lateral movement in one direction. one of said members having a tongue the free end of which engages the other to prevent lateral movement in the opposite direction, said last-named means comprising a punched up part.
4. In a device of the kind described, two joined members. one havingits edge bent to form a hook. the other member prpvided with an offset angular bend engaging 1n sa1d hook. and the first member p rov1ded with a plurality of upwardly extending tongues the 2! 1 ,aeebso free ends of which abut against the offset ing provided with a plurality of incisions 1O angular bend of the other member thereby whereby portions of said member adjacentlocking the members together. the incisions may be moved upwardly to 5. In a device of the kind described, two form a stop against which the inward bend joined members, one having its edge bent to of the flange is adapted to abut. form a hook, the other member having its In testimony whereof I afiix my signa- 15 edge bent at right angles inwardly then outture. wardly to form a flange engaging in said hook, and the first mentioned member be- EMIL KESSLER.
