A POULTRY-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3o, 1909.
Application filed January 30, 1909. Serial No. 475,134.
To all 'whom 'it may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A.. EMERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ellico, in the county of Campbell and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poultry-Coops, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to knock-down poultry coops, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of the same as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device in its set-up position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of two of the meeting corners of the sides. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the device set up. Fig. d is a top plan view with the cover removed, and shown partly in section. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view of the device in its folded position.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawings the reference numeral l denotes the bottom of the tray shaped base of the coop, and 2 the sides thereof. Two oppositely disposed side walls 3 of the coopare hinged at their lower ends by means of strap hinges Ll, to the bottom 1 of the tray, in such manner as shown in Figs. 3 and that they will, when folded, lie flat upon the bottom 1 of the tray within the sides 2 thereof, and will, when raised, rest upon said sides 2 flush with the outer vertical walls thereof. The other oppositely disposed side walls 5 of the coop are hinged at 6 to the upper inner edges of the sides 2, so that when folded they will overlie and rest upon. the side walls 3, as shown in Fig. 5. Said side walls 3 and 5 are so proportioned and hinged to the tray 1 that when in their open position their ends will be slightly separated, as best seen in Fig. 2, whereby hooks 7 pivoted to the inner sides of one pair of side walls, for instance, the side walls 3, may be engaged with eyes 8 in the ends of the side walls 5, whereby said side walls will be rmly locked in their open position.
The depending rim 9 of the top 10 of the coop, which latter, like the side walls 3 and 5, is preferably slotted, projects downwardly on all sides, and when the side walls 3 and 5 are in their open position rests thereupon flush with the outer faces of the latter, and is retained in position by means of hasps l1 hinged to said rim 9 at 12 and having hooks 13 pivoted thereto, engaging eyes 14, fixed to the side walls 3 and passing through apertures in said hasps 11.
When the coop is in its folded position, the side walls 3 and 5 will lie entirely within a vertical projection of the sides 2 of the coop tray, and the top 10 will rest with its rim 9 on said sides 2, iiush with the outer sides of the latter, in which position it will be retained by the engagement of the hasps 11 with eyes 15 on said sides 2.
By forming the tray 1 and top l0 square, the side walls 3 and 5 will be of exactly the same size and interchangeable, so that butI one size .of said side walls need be manufactured.` And this is true, notwithstanding the fact that the side walls 3 are arranged lto fold beneath the side walls 5, as described.
Furthermore, by my particular arrangement the side walls when folded are completely inclosed between the tray l and top 10, the sides 2 of the former contacting with the rim 9 of the latter at all points, whereby a very compact and thoroughly protected article is provided for transportation.
While I have shown and described the side walls 3 and 5 and the top 10 as slotted, it will be understood that they may be ventilated'in any other desired manner, as, for instance, by employing wire mesh in place of the slots. As shown, one of the side walls is provided with the usual door 16.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a knock down poultry coop, a tray shaped base, a removable top having depending sides all around, and hinged side walls of equal height, two oppositely disposed side walls adapted when the device is in knock down position to lie within and fill said tray Shaped base, the other two side walls lying within and lilling the tray shaped top.
2. In a knock down poultry coop, a tray shaped base, a removable top having depending sides all around, and hinged side walls of equal height, two oppositely disposed sile Walls adapted When the device' is In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature, in knock clown position t0 lie Within and lill in presence of two Witnesses. the tray shaped base, the other two side Walls lying` Within and filling the tray i JOSEPH A EMERT 5 shaped top, the said. base and top lying in Witnesses:
