'RILEY T. Meccanica, or GREENCASTLEJUNOTION, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 106,599, dated August 23, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' CHURNS.
The Schedule referred to in these LettersPatent and making part of the same.
ence being han to the accompanying drawing, and to' the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot" the invention consists in the construction and arrangement ot' the device hereinafter described, said device to bemade of iron or any other convenient and suitable material.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and Vuse my said invention, I proceed to describe it more particularly, as follows, viz:
A B O D, of Figures 1 and 2, is the metallic fraaie, in which the machinery of the device is fastened.
G is a master wheel, driven by the winclrI, which gears into a pinion, behind the wrist-wheel F by which I" is driven.
H is a pitman, which, being attached to the wrist of F, communicates a vertical reciprocating rectilinear motion to the cross-head K running in the'guides P and l.
To prevent the cross-head K from oscillating as it 4moves up and down, the guides N and O are arranged to run in the notches N and O'.
The cross-head K is also provided with a socket, L,'and set-screw M, to hold the dasher of the churn,
The frame A B O D E P Q R, as represented in tig. 2, is cast in. one piece, in green sand, thereby doing away with the expense of col-ing, fitting, and
fastening its various parts together, and making it a cheap article of manufacture. 1
To use my said invent-ion, the semiciroular base A D is fastened by any convenient device to the top of an ordinary dash-churn, so that the socket L will be be directly over the dash-hole in the lid.
The dash is fastened in the socket L by means of the set-screw M.
Then, when the machine is operated, by turning the winch Iv with the hand, the reciprocating motion of the cross-head K will produce the same motion in the dash as thel hand does in ordinary churning, and, by reason of its greater rapidity of motion, butter will be produced much qniekertllan byordinary hand churning. l
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metal frame A B C D E P Q R, herein de- "scribed, when constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.4
2..'l`he combination and arrangement ot' the frame A B C D E I Q R, the winch I, the 1naster\vl|eel G, the pinion into which it gears, the wrist-wheel F, the pit-man H, and the cross-head K, substanttally as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the. foregoing specification I have hereunto set my hand this (ith day of April, 1870.
