Description

s. VAN METER.
GHURN.
Patented June 28, 1870.
entre sans 'ST-RUUD VAN METER, OF HENDERSON, ILLINOIS.
Letters'I gatemA No'. 104,800, dated June' 28, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in rhesehettexl Patent and making part ofthe same. w+-
STROUD Van METER, of Henderson, inthe county I of nox and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Ghurns, of which the following is a specification.
'Nat-ure and Objects of the Invention.
The nature andobjeot of my invention relates to` improvements in that class of upright chui-ns, the dashers of which are operated by means of crank, gear-wheels, and pitman, connected with the dasherhandle, and consists in simplifying the operation and economizing in the construction ofsuch churns,`by making the uprightv or flame by which theloperating mechanism is supported so lthat it shall also securely hold the churn in proper position `during the operation of churning, without the aid of any additional device especially designed for-thatpurpose. The necessity vi'orsucli hold-'fast devices is obviated hy my improve-v ment, as is 'also the necessity for having projecting adjustable-standards for connecting the operating mecl1 anism Awith the dasher-handle.
Description of the .Accompanying Drew-ing. Figure 1 is a perspective view. Figure Zis a vertical sectional lview ou the plane of the linea z, fig. 1,
` General Description'.- A is the base of the'frame. y B B are upn'ghts, approaching each other toward their upper ends, and supporting y the Amain parts of thedevi'scs.' y
Cia the drivewheel, and D l'fhe crank for operating the same, thedrive-wheel having an internal gear.
E is a pinion, gearing with the drive-wheel 0.
Fis a iiy-wheel, carried on the same shaft as the `pinion E. G is the dasher-ha-ndle,I of the ordinary reciprocating kind, and issupported in the guide H and churn-lid I, J is a rod, pivoted to the stud' K, on the fly-wheel, and its upper end bent, and passed through the dasher handle-G. L is a stationary guard or stay for the chumflid I. M is'the churn. The construction of my invention is of the simplest kind, and its operation is `eicaciousl The'ehn'rn being in'the positionshown in the drawing, -on withdrawing the end ofthe rod J yfrom theI flasher-handle G, the said handle maybe slipped downward until its upper en'dis released from the guide H5' then, by removing the lid I from its position ont-he uprights B B, the churn may be taken' away from'the fname foany purpose desired` The churn may be' againplaced in position' byareverse operation to that described for 'removing it.-
.The vertical stroke of the 'dashrmay .be regulated and adjusted by having a series of holes in the handle to which the rod J is attached.
I donot claim as my invention the arrangementlor combination of the mechanism bywhich the dasher is operated. v
I-"claim- The upright 'B and guard L, as c0nstructed,in cmbination with churn M, lid I, guide H,- dasher G, pinion E, wheels() and F, and crank D, the whole arranged to operate substantially 'as and for the purpose specified.
, s'rnoUD yA-N METER. Witnesses:
