A. GREEN.
OHURN MOTOR.
No. 290,639. Patented Dec. 18, 1883.
IN VE/VTOH Attorney nirnn TATES ATENT FFICEQ ALEXANDER GREEN, OF DELTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB HEPFINGER, OF SAME PLACE.
CHURN-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..290,639, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed July 12, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Churn- Motor, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. r
This invention relates to motors for converting a rotary into a reciprocating motion, and is especially adapted for use in connection with the dashcr-stafis of churns. Its obj ect is to provide a device possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, durability, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View illustrating a churn embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 8 is a top View.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base-board on which the churn-body B rests, and from which extends an upright back board, 0, that carries the motor mechanism.
In the back board, 0, just above the churnbody, are provided bearings D for a rotary shaft, E, carrying a pinion, F, at its rear end and a balance-wheel, G, at its front end. The front end, H, of this shaft projects some distance from the front face of the upright G, and is supported in a bracket, I, comprising rearwardly-divergent arms J J, by Which it is secured to the said upright, a bearing-eye, K, being carried by these arms at their outer end. The shaft E is operated by a wheel, L, having an operating-crank, M, and provided with gear-teeth N on the inner edge of its rim, which teeth mesh with the pinion F, the said wheel L having its bearing on a stud, O, projecting from the rear face of the upright 0.
P is a horizontal forwardlyprojecting bracket, that is formed with right-angular securing-flanges Q It, by which it is secured to the top edge of the upright 0. At the front edge of this bracket is formed a transverse slot, S, from the front edge of which project two U shaped guides, T T, as shown. This bracket P is preferably formed of a casting, so that all its parts are integral. In the slot S works a vertically-disposed pitman, II, that is 0011- nected to the balance-wheel by a pin, V.
which is adjustable by means of a nut, V, in a slot, X, in one of the spokes Y of the said balance-wheel. The pitman is provided at its top end with a plate, Z, having a forwardly-projecting pin, A that is adapted to be inserted in any one of a series of perforations, B, in the top end of the dashcr Oiwhich moves in one of the guides T. By this means, as the balance-wheel revolves, the pitman imparts a reciprocating motion to the dashcr. The dashcr is provided with a longi tudina-llydisposed rack-plate, D-, that engages a pinion, E and this pinion meshes with a corresponding rack-plate, F arranged on another dashcr, G that is guided in the other guide T, to transmit a reciprocating motion from the main dashcr to the other. By this arrangement these dashers will reciprocate in alternate directions, which is desirable when the reciprocating motion of the dashers is used to operate a churn, as herein shown, in which case the said dashers work through perforations H H in the cover I of 7 5 the churn and carry beaters J The dashers can be readily separated from the pitman, so that they can be removed with the churnbody when it is desired to draw the butter.
Under some circumstances the dashcr G and the gear mechanism by which it receives its motion can be dispensed with, so that only the reciprocating motion of the main dashcr will be used.
I claim as my invention 7 1. The combination of the upright back board,'G, having the bearings D, the brack- V et I, having the securing-arms J J and bearing-eye K, the rotary operating-shaft E, having the balance-wheel G, the bracket 1?, projecting horizontally from the top edge of the upright C, and having the transverse slot S and the U-shaped guides T T, the pitman U, having the pin V, the dashers (J and G, having the vertically-disposed rack-plates D and F and the intermediate pinion, E substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the main frame, comprising the base-board Aand the upright back 0, the main rotary shaft E, carrying the bal- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature 10 in presence of two Witnesses.
