Description

| IUIMHLMHHUUUI Witnesses, Inventor,
GEORGIE iviCcLo'rHLaN, or cHARIToN, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 106,848, dated August 3 0, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' CHURNS.
The Seh-eddie referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt may-concern:
Be it knownthat I, Geenen H. McGLorHLEN, of Chari'toi, in thccounty of Lucas and State of Iowa, have inventeda new and usefulImprovement in Ghurn; and I- do herebyv declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference mai-lied thereon. 1
This invention relates to that class of churns which has vertically'moving dashers operated by means of a pitman and gearing, and consists in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter. In the drawing a side elevation of my improved churn is shown with the churn proper in section.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its Vconstruction and manner of operation.
A A `represent a frame, constructed of suitable uprights and cross-beams, which form bearings for the gearwheel a and pinion a. l
The former is provided with a crank-handle, by means of which it receives motion, and the latter with a crank-shaft, by means of which it is connected to the pitman by an intermediate wrist-pin, as shown.A
This wrist-pin b is provided with acollar, b', which incloses the crank-shaft Zand is secured thereto by means of pin, as shown, the crank-shaft beingv provided with a series of orifices fml the purpose of permitting the wrist-pin to bev adjusted for a greater or lesser length of' stroke. C represents the'pitman, which is provided with an eye atits lower end, which ts upon the wrist-pin and is secured iuplace by means of a-spring pin,as shownjl Its upper end` is bent and inserted into an oriiice inthe upper end of the shaft D, being secured there by means of a pin passed through its end.
The shaft D moves in suitable bearings in the frame. Its lower end is provided with a tubehaving a threaded orifice and set-screw,'as shown.
E represents the dasher-rod, which is made square atv its lower end, and'provided with blades d d, which are inclined from a horizontal plane, as shown.
F represents the churn, which is of the usual tapering cylindrical form.
'The operation is as follows: The churn having been supplied with cream, the dasher-rod is connected to the tube on the shaft D b v means of the setscre\v, and motion is communicated to the gearing. vBy this means a rapid vertical motion is given to the dasher by means of the pitman aud-its connections, and the cream is, consequently, violently agitated.
By means of the collar upon the wrist-pin the length ofthe stroke is easily regulated.
The churn as a whole is simple eiiective in action.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
\Vhat VI claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett'ersPatent of the Unit-ed States, is-
The arrangement of the parts described, to wit, the frame, gearing, adj ust-able wrist-pin, pitrnamshaft, with tube and set-screw, dasher, and vessel, as and for the purpose described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 23d day of May, 1870.
