Description
UNTTED STATES PATENT Fries.
OSGOOD HILTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,299, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed December 20, 1886. Serial No. 222,102. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OsGooD HILTON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the' improve the general construction of the class of n E, secured to thecover of the churn.
ehurns above mentioned, and provide a device that may be quickly and easily taken apart for cleaning or other purposes; andto this end it consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a vertical sectional view of a churn, showing the dashers and operating mechanism in side elevation; Fig. 2, a crosssectional view of the main dasher; Fig. 3, a detail side elevation of the main dasher detached, and Fig. 4 a detail side elevation of the stock or shaft of the main dasher.
Referring to the annexed drawings by letter, A designates the body of the churn, which may be of any improved construction, and is provided with a cover, B, on which the operating mechanism is mounted, and which may be provided with a transparent window or peep-hole, as at C. Passing through a central aperture in the cover is a vertical rotating dasher-shaft, D, which is stepped at its lower end in a recess in the bottom of the churn, and at its upper end in a bracket or standard,
Secured adjnstably, by means of a set-screw, on
the lower end of this shaft, inside of the churnbody, is a double dasher-blade, F, the two arms of which are beveled or concaved in opposite directions, and are provided with short upwardlyextending dashers G, to aid in the churning process. Upon this shaft, near its upper end, is also secured a bevel-pinion, H, which intermeshes with and receives motion from a large bevel gear-wheel, I, on the end of the power-shaft, which is journaled in bearings in the brackets or standards E and J, and may be provided with a crank for operating it. Set loosely on the vertical dasher-shaft, and supported and adjusted by means of the adjustable dasher-blade F, and fittinglooseljand passing through the centralaperture in the cover of the churn, is the main dasher K, having secured upon its upper end the bevel-pinion L, which also intermeshes with and receives motion from the large-bevel-wheel I.
The shaft or stock L of the dasher K is cylindrical at its upper end and fits vloosely in the central aperture in the churn-cover, and has its lower portion squared or made rectangular in cross-section and bifurcated, forming two depending wings or arms, L, to embrace the body of the dasher-blades.v This stock or shaft is provided with a vertical perforation for the passage of the dasher-shaft, as shown. Secured between the depending arms L of the stock L', and provided with vertieal grooves for the reception of the said arms. is the body N of the dasher-blades O. The blades O are made integral with and' project laterally from each side of this body, the blades on one side being inclined in opposite directions from those on the other side, as clearly shown in the drawings, for the purpose of thoroughly churning the cream contained in the churn-box. The body of the dasher-blades is also provided with a central aperture for the passage of the dasher-shaft, and the lower' blades may be provided with `short downwardly-projecting dashers P, similar to those on'the double dasher-blade F.
Interposed between the bearing-surfaces of the main dasher and the double dasher-blade F are the washers Q, for the purpose of predasher' is supported and adjusted to its place IKO shaft. or stock of the :main dasher, provided with a pinion and having a central perforation for the passage of the said Vertical shaft and vertically bifureated to form two depending arms, the vertically-perforated body of the main dasher, provided with dasher-blades and;
vertically groovedon its outside for the reeep- .15
`tion of the depending arms of the main Stock,
and the adjustable double dasher-blade upon the vertical dasher-shaft, substantially as described. y
