MATTHEW REEVES, OF MADISON, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO AUGUST PHILLIP PILGER, OF NORFOLK, NEBRASKA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,738, dated November 20, 1883,
i Application filed March 27, 1883. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW REEvEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in oscillating churns, having for its objects the easy and quick removal of the churn from its support and operating mechanism, as well as providing the means to View the interior and its contents without removing the lid. The objects are attained by the means hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the churnat rest. Fig. 2 is a perspective view Fig. 3is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a detailed View of the flat side of the pendulum and its adjustable weight. Fig. 5 is a view of the churn with the lid or cover removed and the ends broken away, and shows position of breaker. Fig. .6 is a detached view of the breaker removed from' the interior of the churn.' Fig; 7 is a detached view of the lid of the churn.
The letter A indicates the ends of the churn; A, one side; A, the other side; A, the top; and A the lid or cover.
B are handles at each end of the churn.
C is a slotted arm attached to-one of the sides of the churn. i
\ G is a crankarm attached to the shaft of the pendulum G, and has a pin, a, which enters the slot N and moves freely therein.
0' is a standard attached at the bottom to the stand J. r
O is a pendulum secured to a shaft having bearings in the top of standard 0'. It is provided with an adjustable weight, E, having a set-screw, e.
D is a thermometer placed upon the side of A.
A is the top or lid of the churn, and has a pane of glass, P, secured therein, in order that the contents of the churn may be viewed without lifting the cover A.
The churn is provided with lugs M on each side, having openings adapted to fit over the cross-bariL, which is attached to the stand J at an opening in the upright K, at one end, and at the other entering the standard 0'. When the pin *0 is removed from the slot N, the churn may be lifted off the bar L, should it be desirable to do so. I
G is a spout in the end A.
The thermometer is intended to show the temperature of the cream. The weight E may be moved up or down the stem 0 of the pendulum, and secured thereto in any desired position by the set-screw c.
The breaker H is placed on the inside of the churn when churning, and taken out to gather the butter. When inside the churu,it occupies a transverse position.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, 1s-
l. A churn-body having forked lugs at the bottom adapted to fit over a cross-bar, L, and
vertical slotted arm 0, in combination with removable pint, crank-arm 0, standard 0, and pendulum 0, having adjustable weight E, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an oscillating churn, the body AA? A, having lugs M, vertical slotted arm 0, and handles B, removable pin 1', crank O, and standard 0", in combination with pendulum 0, having adjustable weight E, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In an oscillating churn, a body AA A, having handles 13, forked lugs M, removable cover A, and vertical arm 0, in combination with crank-arm 0, having removable pin c, the stand J J J, the upright K, the standard 0, and pendulum 0, provided with adjustable weight E, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MATTHEW REEVES.
Witnesses A. W. STOREY, J. F. DUNCAN.
