UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS W. LEAKE, OF OSWEGO. KANSAS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,620, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed September 20, 1879.
To all whom/it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS W. LEAKE, of Oswego, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my churn. Fig. 2 is a view of a perforated disk.
My invention relates to churns; and it consists of two perforated disks secured to a vertical shaft and connected by spiral blades, in combination with a removable cover, frame, and a toothed wheel engaging with a pinion and operated by a lever, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The letter Aindicates the top of the churn, which is rabbeted, as shown, on its under side, so as to fit the mouth of the churn-body. To the upper surface of said top is secured a frame, B, having bearings or boxes I) for the journals 0 of a ClOW11-Wl'l66l, D, having beveled teeth d. The said frame also forms a bearing at d for the upper end of a vertical shaft, E, which is also journaled in a box, F, let into said top A at its center. The said shaft carries two perforated disks, G G, to which are attached the curved propellershaped blades H, as shown.
Near the upper end of the vertical shaft, above the top A, is secured a pinion, I, with which the teeth of the crown-wheel D engage, the said crown-wheel being provided with a lever or handle, L, by means of which said wheel may be oscillated, the oscillations of the same serving to give a back-and-forth partially-rotating movement to the perforated disks and the intermediate propeller-blades, so as to cause a downward circulation of the contents of the churn when the disks are moved in one direction, and an upward circulation when said disks and their propellerblades are moved in an opposite direction.
It will be perceived that as constructed the vertical shaft is wholly supported from the top of the churn, rendering a seat for its lower end in the body of the churn unnecessary.
'Having described my invention, what I claim is In achurn, the perforated disks G and G, secured to the shaft E and connected by the spiral blades H, in combination with the cover A. frame B, wheel D, pinion I, and lever L, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS W. LEAKE.
