PATENT CF-FIGE.
OF CAIRO, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECIPROCATING CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,054; dated February'fi, 1877; application filed November 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J GEN H. SHEEFEE, of
Cairo, in the county of Henderson and State sponding parts.
My invention relates to gearing for converting the rotary motion of a hand-crank into the reciprocating motion required for driving the dasher; and it consists in a crank-disk that is attached to a shaft that is journaled in a standard attached to the churn-cover, and driven by spur-gearing turned by handpower, and in a slotted cross-head that is driven by the crank, and has its ways in the standard, and is connected with a jointed dasher-rod.
The object of the invention is to provide mechanism for driving the dasher of a common churn, which will facilitate the laborious operation of churning.
In the drawing, A is a vertical standard at tached to the cover B, and provided with a circular recess, a, for receiving the crank-disk G, which is attached to the shaft b. The shaft I) is journaled in the standard A, and is provided with a pinion, c, which is driven by a spur-wheel, D, that turns upon the stud d fixed in the standard A. E is a cross-head sliding in ways 9 in the standard A, and slotted at e to receive the crank-pin f, that projects from the face of the disk 0. F is a dasher-rod that is attached centrally to the lower side of the cross -head, and projects through the central opening of the churncover. The dasher-rod is made in two parts that are united by a jointbelow the churncover at h to admit of raising and tipping the churn-cover. The wheel D is provided with a crank pin or handle, G, for operating the gearlng.
The advantages claimed for my invention are that it is simple and inexpensive, and may be applied to any dasher-churn, and it greatly facilitates the operation of churning.
Having-thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the churn-cover, having perforated and recessed standard A, the
sliding crosshead E jointed to dasher, and the crank-disk 0, all constructed and arranged in connection with spur-pinion and hand-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
