Description

(No Model.)
S. GILES. I GHURN MOTOR.
Patented Aug. 13, 1889.
ammmcom Sta/ iren @dlc after/wal o STEPHEN GILES, OF PATTEN, MAINE,
PATENT OFFrcEw ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO GEORGE \V. COOPER, OF SAME PLACE.
CHURN- MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,801, dated August 13, 1889.
A Application filed February 28, 1889. Serial No. 301,585. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'STEPHEN GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Patten, in the countyof Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churn-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in churn-motors. I
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of churn-motors and their attachment to the churn and the dasher.
The invent-ion consists in the construction and the novel combination and arrangement of parts h erein after fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a churn embodying my improvements,
the side of the churn being partially broken away to show the disposition of the dasher. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the dasher-shaft.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates a churn-body of any preferred construction, provided with a cover B, having a suitable ventilating-hole and a central opening I), from which a dasher O is suspended by means of a vertical shaft D.
The dasher 0 may be of any desired const-ruction; but I have shown one composed of horizontal arms 0 and depending blades C and it is suitably connected to the vertical shaft D, by which the dasher is rotated. This vertical shaft D is provided a short distance from its lower end with an annular groove, the lower side of which will be flush with the top of the cover, in order to be engaged by two clamping-arms E, which are pivoted at one end to the cover and provided intermediate of their ends with similar semicircular recesses 6, designed to enter the annular groove (Z and embrace the shaft at this point and hold it suspended in the central opening I) of the cover. These arms are preferably the same width throughout their length, and this makes them curved or bent at the place .where the recesses e are formed. By this construction the dasher C may readily be placed in and removed from the cover, and in order to hold the clamping-arms E around the vertical shaft D spring-catches F, consisting of flat springs, are secured in recess 1), formed in the cover B, and are adapted to engage the free ends of the clamping-arms E when the latter are brought together and hold them in such engagement until their inner free ends are depressed. Above the annular flange the vertical shaft D is squared a suitable portion of its length, and provided upon this squared portion (1' with a beveled pinion G, which meshes with a beveled gear-wheel II, that is fixed to the end of ahorizontal shaft I, mounted in a rectangular frame J.
The frame J consists of a base-plate j,which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the top of the churn, the parallel sides j, and the top 7 which is extended inward over the central opening Z), and is provided with 'a bearingj in which the upper end of the vertical shaft D is journaled.
The horizontal shaft I is provided with a suitable crank-handle to operate the churn, and is loosely mounted in the parallel sides 7' and is capable of limited longitudinal movement to carry the wheel H in and out of gear with the pinion G, and in order to retain the wheel II in such engagement the shaft I is provided with an annular groove 1', which is engaged by a sliding catch K, secured above said shaft I to the inner face of the outer side piece j? The latch K has a curved recess 70 in its lower end to engage the annular groove 2', in which it is held by gravity, and it is provided with a longitudinal slot 7t, through which passes a screw L, that secures it to the side 7' and the said slot permits limited vertical play sufficient to carry the latch into and out of the annular groove 2'.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- The combination, in a churn, of the cover provided with a central opening and a recess 1), the frame J, the vertical shaft carrying the pinion G and having an annular groove, the
elainpingarms pivoted to the cover and engaging the annular groove of the vertical shaft, the flat springs F, secured in the recess 1), at the opposite ends thereof, and having their inner free ends arranged to engage the clamping-arms, the horizontal shaft I, capable of limited longitudinal movement and provided With an annular groove 1', the gearwheel II, fixed to the end of said shaft I, and
10 the sliding latch L, having at its lower end a I curved recess adapted to engage the annular groove of the shaft I, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN GILES.
