SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 569,925, dated October 20, 1896.

To all whom t may concern: A
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. KRAMER, of Coldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Churn, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates generally to churns, and particularly to that class thereof known as vibrating churns, in which the dasher is revolved first in one direction, then quickly reversed in the opposite direction.
The object of my invention is to provide a churn of this character which shall be cheap and simple in construction, easy of manipulation, and one in which all the parts can be easily adjusted for operative purposes.
Another object is to provide a churn which can be operated by foot-power, thereby rendering the operation easier and quicker.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, all of which will be first described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forminga part of this speciiication, Figure l is a side view of a churn constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section Figs. 3 and 4, detailed views of construction.
In carrying out my invention I employ a flat base or platform A, upon which is mounted an upright standard B, said standard being braced by means of the diagonal bracerods C, which extend from the sides of the base near the forward end to the sides of the standard near the top. The rear end of the platform or base is cut away, and pivoted within said cut-out portion are a pair of treadles D. The upright standard is also cut away at its upper end, and in said cut-out portion is journaled a bracket-arm E, said bracket-arm having a supplemental arm F attached thereto. Upon the under side, between said arms, is journaled a short shaft G,carrying a pulley H between said arms. An operating-cord I is wound about said pulley, the opposite ends of said cord being connccted to the free ends of the treadles, said cord passing over sheaves K, mounted upon a bracket L, secured upon the rear side of' the upright standard oppositethe cut-out portion.
M indicates the churn-body, which rests upon the forward portion of the' platform, and in order to prevent rotation of such churn I construct the bottom thereof with cleats m, which iit in longitudinal grooves for, formed in the top of the platform or base.
Within the churn-body is arranged a central pivot m2, upon which the dasher turns, and upon the bottom of said body are arranged the breaker-rods m3, while at the sides of the body are arranged the breakers m4.
The dasher N consists of a central post ynI and the blades 1t and n2, the blade n2 being slotted vertically to permit the blade n to pass through and through the post, said blades being located by means of wedgeshaped keys n3. The post is provided at its upper end with a sleeve O, having notches cut therein, adapted to receive the key P, carried upon the end of the vibrating shaft, as clearly shown.
In operation the cream is placed within the churn-body, the dasher set in place, and the cover fixed upon the churn body. The bracket-arm is then lowered, so as to bring the vibra-tin g shaft into engagement with the slotted sleeve of the post, and after this is completed the churning operation is carried on by pressing alternately upon the treadles. Each operation causes the dasher to be rapidly revolved irst in one direction and then in the other. n
This apparatus has been found to effect a complete separation of the butter-globules in a very short space of time and at the expense of very little labor.
The bracket-arm is provided with the rear extension Q, pivoted to the upper end of the upright B, which prevents said arm being thrown too far upward, and the supplemental bracket-arm upon the under side of the main bracket-arm prevents said bracket being thrown too far downward.
