JOSIAH OOTHOUDT, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY C. J ERAULD, OF SAME PLAGE.
Laim Patent Nasos, ma August 4, 186s IMPROVEMENT IN UHURN.
'ro ALL WHOM 1r MAX ooNennNe l i Be it known that I, JOSIAH OOTHO'UDT, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and I`i`do hereby declare that the following is l a full, clear, .and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a' part of this specification, and-in which drawing is represented a view of my churn, partly in section and partly in perspective. y
The object of my invention is to' provide a simple, cheap, and expeditious `means for churning; and the nature of it consists in the employment of two shafts, one beinghollow, and fitting over the other, and attached to the churn and dasher respectively,^land operated by means of a. bevelled wheel, gearing with pinions placed on the shafts, substaptially as hereinafter described. Y
To enable others skilled in the art .to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation. A
A represents a frame, to-which my devicesare attached. C represents a section of the tub or churn,
which is furnished with a lid. In the centre of this tub is a stationary casing or shell, c. I D designates a long shaft, placed in a vertical position, and having its lowei` end working in a box, fastened to one of the pieces -of the frame. The opposite-end of this shaft, or that portion of it situated within lthe tub, slencased by the shell or casing c. The shaft D is also furnished at itsy lower endwith a bevelled pinion, e, which gears'into thewheel F, and upon the upper end of this 'shaft is placed the dasher B, which has its bearing-surface on the casing c.' E represents a'hollow shaft, having a portorrof its surface broken away in the drawing, and encircling the 'shaft D. The upper end of this shaft is'forhied with a flange or cap, by means of which it is screwed or fastened "to the under side of the tub C, its lower end being provided witha bevelled pinion,e, which also gears with the wheel I", and secured in place by means of a boato the frame A. F designates the bevclled wheel, by means of which motion is communicated to the churn and dasher, and is permanently secured to one end` of a shaft, a, which has its bearings in boxes fastened to theside of the frame, and is placed at right angles with the wheel F. The opposite end of.the shaft a is supplied with a crank, to which is secured the handle b.
Thus it willbe seen, from the foregoing arrangement, that while my churn is in operation I obtain two motions, one ofthe tub, in which the contents for churning are placed, and the other from the dasher, the two revolving in opposite directions, and thus causing the work to be performed in a much shorter time than by the ordinary. 'process of churning. l i
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The tub G, flasher B, sleeve oncasifng c, hollowshaft E, wheel F, shaft D, and gear e e, when all are oombined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony thatl claim the foregoing as my own, I aHix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH OO'IHOUDT.
Witnesses CiIAs. A. FULLER, THOMAS, Lower.
