Description

(No Model.)
J` M. GREER.
GHURN.
Patented Jan. 1895.
PATENT rricn.
JAMES'M. GREER, OF PLYMOUTH, INDIANA.
CHURN.
SPEGIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,926, dated January l, 1895.
Application filed October 22, 1894. Serial No. 526,590- (No model.)`
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, .I AMES M. GREER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Marshall and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and durable attachment to churns for operating the dasher thereof and which can be readily detached and removed from the churn cylinder or conveniently connected thereto, and consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a sectional View of the churn-cylinder showing the dasher in elevation and the attachment for operating the same partly in section; Fig. 2, a detailV View in perspective of a portion of the churn cylinder showing the attachment for operating the dasher.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the cylinder of the churn which may be of any preferred construction, said cylinder having upon its bottom and interior a bearing a and at its top a vertical slot b, which extends from its upper edge to a short distance down the side of the cylinder and terminates in an inclined bearing c.
The dasher B may be of any suitable construction, but preferably with radial wings disposed at right angles to each other as shown. The dasher shaft unlike those in ordinary use is neither arranged horizontally or vertically but disposed on an incline across the churn-cylinder which enables it to be better utilized in giving greater agitation to the cream when it is in motion and consequently its eectiveness increased.
The churn-dasher B consists of the radial wings d and the shaft c, which shaft at its lower end has a short journal or pin f to engage rwith the bearing a, and the opposite end of the shaft is a rod g upon which is a bevel pinion C. The pinion C meshes with a bevel gear wheel D which is located between the upright arms ci k of a bracket E, said wheel being connected to a horizontal shaft h which has its bearings in the uprights and provided with a crank-handle F for turning it. This bracket is detachably connected to the churn-cylinder Aby suitable braces Z m in any convenient and well vknown manner, said bracket being on line with the slot b so that v the pinion will properly engage with the gear wheel. The arm c' is slotted as shown at n to receive the shaft g and enable it to pass through the side of the churn cylinder and the pinion thereon properly to engage with the gearwheel. In order to hold the shaftg in position and upon the inclined bearing c at the lower end of the slot b, there is provided a clamp consisting of the two sections G II connected together by a screw-bolt o and thumb-nut p. The two clamping sections slip over the churncylinder as lshown in Fig. 1, and by tightening up the thumb-nut p to two sections will be drawing tightly against the sides of the cylinder. The clampingsection H has a tongue s to lit into the slot n to hold the rod down against the inclined bearings c e', the bearing o" being at the bottom of the slot n. rlhe clamping section G has a groove t to fit over the shaft g to further assist in securely holding the shaft in position.
The churn-cylinder is provided with a conical sectional cover, the sections thereof being shown at I J whereby a space above the top of the churn-cylinder for the splashing of the cream and also to enable the small section to be removed so as to inspect the cream while the churn is in motion without danger of the cream splashing out over the side of the cylinder.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A churn consisting of a slotted cylinder, a flasher having a rod extending through the slot, a pinion on the rod, a bracket having a slotted arm to receive said rod and connected to the churn cylinder, a driving gear-wheel and shaft connected to the bracket, and a clamping device consisting of two sections having respectivelya tongue and groove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. GREER.
