IMPROVEMENT IN GHURN.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GooDWYN, of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and improved Churn; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which my invention is represented by a perspective view.
This invention relates to an improved means for'operatin be performed much more easily than by any of the old methods.
In the drawing, A represents an old-fashioned upright churn, having a vertically-reciprocating dashcr, B, and resting upon a slotted plank, C; D is nn' upright post, supported upon the plank C, and provided with shelves or flanges, d d, which operate as guides for the handle of the dasher. E is a spiral spring, attached-to the under side of the upper flange, d, and coiled around the handle of the dasher, operating to force the latter down in the churn. The dasher is raised by the operation of a. treadle, F, connecting-rod or strap G, lever H,
7 attached to a rocking-wheel, I, or simply pivoted on a fulcrum in the upper end of the post D, and strap or rod J, connecting the short arm of the lever, orithe perimeter of the wheel, with the top of the churn-dasher. The only object in using a wheel ,in preference to'a lever is, to give a perfectly even vertical motion to'the flasher,
without swaying it in one direction or the other.
r The whole apparatus is simple and cheap, and by using it a person will be enabled to sit inhis chair, employing hishands about other work, while, with one foot, he performs the operationo'f churning, thereby saving all the time required for the latter operation, besidesperfor'ming it with greater ease than in the old way. I am aware thattreadles have been used in connection with a, revolving shaftor wheel, for thepurpose of g the churn, whereby the work of churning can working a. churn-dasher, the treadle operating to give thewheel or shaft :1. continuous rotating. motion. I do not claimanything of that natureas my invention; but
What Ido claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, viz:v The combination of a rocking-wheel or lever, I, with the straps G J, treadle F, dasher D, and spring E, the whole constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose described.
