UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. LAVEZZI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONEIIALF TO IRVIN C. LAMBERT, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-ATTACHING CLIP.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMrmL J. LAvEzzi, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SpringAttaching Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clips for attaching springs such as used in upholstered furniture, seats, bed-springs or the like and the object thereof is to provide a simple and eiiicient clip of this character possessing many advantages as regards its application and its use.
lVhile I have herein shown my invention as applied to a bed spring wherein ratan is commonly used as the supporting member to which the spring is attached, my invention is not limited to this special use for I contemplate employing my invention wherever applicable.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a top plan view illustrating my clip connecting a spring to the border member of the frame which member is in the present instance a strip of ratan as is commonly employed; Fig. 2 a bottom plan thereof; Fig. 3 a side elevation thereof; Fig. l a` detail view illustrating the method of attachment of the clip; Figs. 5 and 6 cross-sections on the lines 5 5 and 6 6 respectively of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 a plan view of the clip detached and before it is applied; Fig. 8 an edge view thereof and Fig. 9 an elevation of the applying tool.
Referring to the present embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings and referring; more particularly to Figs. 7 and S, the clip which is made of thin sheet metal and of suitable size and dimensions comprises a body portion A having project ing from the edge thereof and near its opposite ends one or more, but preferably two parallel extensions or strips A. This same edge of the body portion also has a short extension A2 located between the other two extensions or strips and having the angular relation with the body portion as shown in Fig. 8 when the strip is unapplied. The body portion A is provided near its ends and in line with the extensions or strips A with two slots a through which the free ends of such extensions are adapted to be passed after they have encircled the wire Specification of Letters Patent.

or ratan B and the wire C of a spring. The extensions or strips A. are provided at their free vends with openings a adapted to receive the point Z of the applying-tool D in the manner hereinafter explained.
In practice the clip is placed upon the wire C with the body portion bearing against the inner side of the rata-n B and with the long extensions or strips A extending underneath the wire and the short extension A2 vextending thereover. The clip is now brought adjacent the ratan B at the point where the spring is to be attached thereto. The short extension A2 is now bent and locked over the wire by means of pliers or t-he like and the long extensions A are then folded over the ratan B and passed through the slots o in the body portion of the clips whereupon the parts assume the position indicated in F 4. By preference th-e parts of these extensions A which engage the wire C are now crimped by means of piers or the like to the condition illustrated in Fig. 5. A suitable tool, such as that illustrated in Fig. 9 is now employed with its prongs or points Z inserted in the holes a. This tool is now used as a lever which is moved to the left when the parts are viewed as in Fig. 4, with the result that the extensions or strips A are caused to firmly engage and bind together the ratan and spring. Vhen the parts have thus been firmly clamped and the free ends of the extensions or strips A have been bent over as far as possible by the tool, the tool is removed and such free ends are further bent and doubled back upon the top portion of the clip, whereupon the parts of the clip assume the position clearly indicated in Figs. l, 3 and 5.
The clip is thus capable of being easily attached to the parts and is moreover capable of firmly securing such parts together. Furthermore, when the clip is made as herein shown with the two long extensions or strips A a very long bearing is made for the spring C with the result that it is impossible for t-he parts to rock or to have any play with respect to each other. Thile I prefer to construct the clip as shown in Fig. 7, it will be understood that some measure of my invention may be obtained by omitting the short extension A2 and also that one of the extensions A may be omitted.
I claini:
l. A clip ot the character described coinprising a body portion provided with a slot and having` an extension adapted to encircle the parts to be connected and arranged to be passed through said slot with its free end doubled back upon said body portion both the body portion and extension forming` a loop encirclingl said parts.
2. A clip of the character described coinprising a body portion provided with a slot and having),- an extension adapted to encircle the parts to be connected and arranged to be passed through said slot with its free end doubled back upon said body portion, said free end having` an opening' to receive a tool both the body portion and extension forining` a loop encircling said parts.
3. A clip of the character described coinprising a body portion provided with a slotand having an extension adapted to encircle the parts to be connected and arranged vto be passed through said slot and also having a short extension adapted to engage only one of said parts both the body portion and eX- tension forming a loop encircling said parts.
et. A clip of the character described coniprising a body portion provided with tivo slots near opposite ends and having tivo extensions projectin` :troni the saine edge ot the body portion and located in line with the slots respectively, said extensions being arranged to encircle the parts to be connected and the :free ends thereof to be passed through said slots and bent over upon said body portion.
A clip of the character described eeniprising a body portion provided with two slots near opposite ends and having two extensions projectingfrom the saine edge oif the body portion and located in line Wit-h the slots respectively, said extensions being arranged to encircle the partsto be connected and the free ends thereof to be passed through said slots and bentI over upon said body portion, said free ends having openings to receive a tool in the act of applying the clip.
6. A clip of the character described coinprisinggr a body portion provided With two slots near opposite ends and having tivo eX- tensions projecting from the saine edge of the body portion and located in line with the slots respectively, said extensions being arranged to encircle the parts to be connected and the Jree ends thereof to be passed through said slots and bent over upon said body portion, said body portion also having a short extension projecting frein the saine edge oit' the body portion and located between the other extensions, such short eXtension being arranged to engage one of the parts to be connected.
